So if you signed Carlo for 3 years, he's still an RFA. You would have his rights etc. If you sign him for 4 years, he's a UFA at the end of the deal. He'll get paid more, he can sign with anyone without compensation etc. If he signed for 5 years, you're "buying," one year of free agency. 6 years, and you're "buying," two years of free agency, and so on, and so forth. That's what a team like Edmonton would sign McDavid to such a big deal, because they were buying out four years of free agency.

4 years for mcavoy is a bridge. he's a group 1 RFA, he would still be an RFA after a 4 year.
