Marleau for Demers

Created by: BCAPP
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 21, 2019
Published: Jun. 21, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
So before people say it makes no sense. The leafs are a Cap team and Arizona is a cash team.

NOTE THIS IS AFTER JULY 1, when Marleau only has $1.25 mil left on his salary

That means that Marleau is a ****ty player for the Leafs to have (high cap, low salary) but fine for Arizona

That means that Demers is ****ty for Arizona , okay for the Leafs (Cap hit of about 4 million and about 3.2 million cash due each of this year and next year (Florida pays 12% of his salary/cap).

Demers is a 3rd pairing RD on Arizona, being behind Goligoski and Hjalmarsson on their depth chart. Paying about 6.5 million over the next two years for a depth player for them is hard.

Arizona is doing a favour to the Leafs by taking Marleau, but it is a favour that doesn't hurt them. Getting rid of Demers, is a less favour.

Remember any team (the Leafs included) would be happy to pay Marleau $1.25 million next year. He is still a good 3rd line winger or at worst excellent 4th line winger/c with tonnes of experience. He would easily get 2 million next year and no one would blink. He still got 16 g and 37 pts last year

When Dermott/Hyman come back Kivilhalme/Mikheyev go down to AHL

His signing bonus is paid in two installments. Half on July 1st and the other half on December 1st. So Arizona would actually have to pay him 2.75 million.

Arz would rather keep Demers and have Toronto retain half the cap and keep Borgman....

In all honesty why would they?

Why does Arizona care about the cap on Marleau? As long as Hossa is going the other way I can't see them caring.

I honestly don't see them wanting Demers for about 3.2 million for the next two years. I may be mistaken. But from my eyes the above is a win win.

I suppose they could just take Marleau with like 30% retained but then what are they getting? Just getting Marleau for with 800k or if the above poster is right about 2 mil? I guess that would make sense...

I did hear Friedman mention that once a couple months ago but never confirmed.

If your confident I'll accept that.

In that case he was easily worth 3-3.5 million last year. As he declines further he'll likely be worth around that this year. May be a little rich.

I honestly have trouble with both players value on either end of that trade.

I also find Vancouver moves really hard to ever understand as Aquilini/fans never let them properly build for the future instead they constantly make short sighted decisions. So long story short if you think it's off I'll believe you
