Caps giving up way too much here. I think at least add a CGY 1st rounder to that package. Samsonov is rated as a top 3 Goalie prospect in the league.

Caps should NEVER EVER trade Samsonov. He is the future. He'll be better than Holtby and a lot cheaper. He's the key to staying competitive for years to come. If they trade him then they are saying this is the last year we'll be good and might as well blow it up next season.

Where is the upgrade on wing for Calgary? Jakub Vrana is not better than Elias Lindholm....

Losing Lindholm on that unreal contract is not needed just to get a goalie

thats extreme imo the capitals can resign holtby for close to his current number and same with backstrom.....you save money by adding Jankowski and Lindholm. I think we all glorify how good samsonov is and forget how great holtby actually is.....

re read what I said.....I said the flames get the goalie of the future and the caps upgrade on wing and get a cheaper 3rd line center....

Lindholm is very good but vrana is young and very capable of being a 60 point player.... eller and jan are about equal and samsonov imo is worth way more than a 2nd.....flames major issue the last few years imo is terrible goaltending this helps them

Holtby will be getting $9M+ on the open market next season. 1) Caps can't afford that and 2) they shouldn't sign that. Holtby has been declining like all goalies when 30 comes. Would be idiotic to sign him to a long term contract.

I love Holtby, he's arguably a top 5 goalie, but Samsonov will also be a top 5 goalie (maybe better) and be a hell of a lot cheaper and great for a long time.

I'd be very very very surprised if he signs that deal. I imagine he'll want to go out and get paid one last time. But still, the point remains, they shouldn't do that. No reason to spend that money on a cap crunch team when Samsonov will be ready. Now, I won't mind if they do it then trade him after a year for a nice return but I don't think that will happen.

okay so lets say samsonov has another average to terrible year in Hershey....what then call him up to the nhl right? or lets say he actually have a fantastic year in the nhl and pulls a kuzy and "will just go back to the khl" unless we pay him his asking price.? a lot of unknown risk

Samsonov had a bad first half in the AHL then an absolutely amazing back half once he learned the NA game. Kid is going to be top of the AHL charts next season.

And yeah there's risk, but there's risk to everything. What if we sign Holtby he continues to degrade (like he will) and we are stuck with a $7M (at very best, most likely way more) goalie that's playing average hockey.

holtby will be the next MAF once he leaves,..... hes been behind a very very okay capitals defense that has a offensive mind.....I don't think samsonov will be able to handle that top of work load

Samsonov just needs one more year in the AHL, if that, then he'll be ready for the NHL.
