I think the Oilers match that bc they dont want to lose him in that manner, It would be easier to just trade for him using a 2nd round pick vs giving him an unearned contract like that.

Why not just offer a 2nd in trade? Surely you could sign JP for much cheaper. Also does JP risk oilers matching and getting stuck there?
