Complete Rebuild

Created by: galchy271
Team: 2019-20 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 2, 2019
Published: Jul. 2, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
MB needs to pick a direction.
We clearly aren't going to win now.
By the time Caufield, Suzuki, Kotkaniemi, Poehling, Brook, Romanov are in their prime - Petry, Weber, Price will be declined and we will be right back to mediocre/incomplete.
Solution is rebuild. Continue to stockpile picks and prospects.

This roster finishes last for a couple years.
They get a french star in Lafreniere and move forward.

This is the worse offer ever for Petry. He could bring a 1st + B Prospect. Colorado didnt trade Barrie to get Petry a couple days after.

just being conservative - the overall Idea is we need to stockpile picks and prospects and finish last a couple times.
Right now we will never compete with TOR BOS TB ETC.
NEED BIG CHANGES.

while I agree rebuilding is the best bet, that Weber contract will likely cost you a first or a top prospect to unload. you definitely won't be getting a first back without significant salary retention.

and I disagree with Bergevin. With Petry at 5.5m and 31 y/o, I think the offer you posted is fair. Not a top pairing guy on any contending team, preferably a #4 on a cup contender.

Weber contract isn't that bad, he's playing great hockey still. 7.8 is now a bargain.
Could even retain 1.0M if we have to. I understand it is till he is 41 but still.

we're not as far off as people think .

Suzuki and Brook are likely to both earn jobs.
Suzuki will have to play wing to do it and Brook LD but both players have experience playing those positions.

Romanov coming off year 1/2 of his KHL contract turned Pro and took to D honors at WJC then followed it up by winning a Gagarin Cup
his first season . Entering his final year as Reigning KHL Champ at just 19 i expect him to make a big impact his year at WJC and in the playoffs again
come 2020-21 he'll be in a habs uniform

Caufield is close as a goal Scorer but not as an Athlete .
he's never played in a system similar to NHL with long road trips and playoffs just round robins and games around school .
dont get me wrong , he's a stud but he'll need 1-2 years depending if he goes NCAA or OHL(OHL can help conditioning ,NCAA just fine tunes every other area but)

KK is here and established

Poehling put on 40lbs of muscle and grew and inch becoming the biggest Center prospect we got .
he's quick, powerfull and opted out of an off season to prepare for a full 82 game season at the NHL level .
if we put him with Byron and a big guy like Armia to start off i think you'll see an impact.
but he'll hit another level when his buddy Caufield gets to the NHL , they put on quite the show at Camp .

Short term we're looking at potentially having to move Tatar or Danault early depending on which youth steps up

not a rebuild but we continue the reset as Bergevin said (reset part)
we can trade Petry (next summer) we have Brook , we can trade Tatar we have Drouin to bring in top 6 or Drouin take Shaw spot i don't know who's gonna replace him imediatly
that give us enough draft pick with our own

While Weber is still more than serviceable when he is healthy, he is not a top pairing guy on a contender. The issue with him is he hasn't played a full season in 3 years no team will want to take the chance on him for 7 more years. His contract, his health, his age, and his likely declining ability are the reasoning I have for him not being worth anything of note. His best years are likely behind him, which would take a Chiarelli type offer to get a 1st rounder from.

we will keep Weber he will be our vet for the youg guys comming
we can trade him in the last 3 years of his contract to a team looking for the cap floor (very low salary with big cap)
it won't be a big return but for now and near future he is usefull
