It’s kinda crazy how GMJR went from looking like a genius to looking like an idiot over the course of his relatively short tenure as GM of the penguins.

That Tanev contract is not helping his case, either grimace

Could’ve signed Panik (whose better) to 2.5 million X 4. Makes absolutely no sense. Rutherford has lost his mind

Yeah I made that exact argument yesterday to another pens fan and was basically told I’m only seeing what I want to see and that the caps moves they made yesterday aren’t good... I mean I guess we’ll have to wait and see until October to know how good every one of these signings turns out to be, but it’s kinda hard to justify anything about that Tanev contract. I’m even a little iffy on the term on Panik’s deal, but he could turn out to be a very solid add for the AAV.

Hopefully for your guys sake, GMJR can move that Johnson contract if nothing else.

I’ve had a pens fan try their hardest to justify this Tanev signing, so don’t feel bad if you’re getting “roasted” by other pens fans on this site. We’re all just armchair GM’s with nothing better to do until hockey is back in October smile

What's crazy is I think Tanev is an extremely effective 3rd line player, but that term for a bottom 6 player reminds me of good ole Garth Snow

If they were gonna give him that much term, at least get the AAV way down. AAV should’ve been around 2 million for 6 years.

As a jets fan I think your wrong I’ve watched Tanev play for the Jets the last 3 years and boy is he good he’s a great penalty killer he was 3rd in hits throughout the league and he’s really fast easily one if the best two way forwards in the game. It’s to bad the Jets lost him.

I don't think anyone is arguing against his talent. Most have issue with the amount of money and term for a guy that will likely be on the 4th line. I think he will be a good addition.

It's more frustrating for fans of a team that is cap strapped every season to see such poor asset/cap management. Which Rutherford has had a solid streak of lately.

Exactly. Tanev at 3 years 2.5 million id love. His Term and AAV just don’t justify his performance. Dudes never broken 30 points or 15 goals and he’s getting paid 3.5 mill over 6 years

Have you tried looking at the team roster and makeup without factoring in the contracts? You say a lot that you like the guy but not his contract. Yes, if they didn't have some of these guys they could potentially have more money to spend. If you get rid of Johnson and gudbranson and Tanev the team would have 11 million to sign their RFAs, and another forward and 2 defensemen. They still wouldn't be able to be major players in free agency where everyone get overpaid.
The panik contract is better than the tanev contract. But the pens didn't need a guy like panik. They have enough players that can score. They needed players that are fast and responsible defensively. That's what they got.
