under the table? get f out here lol. Bergevin struck out on all the big UFAs and put that offer sheet out in desperation to show owners that he's trying "everything" to improve the team. He knew they were 100% gonna match

It's not happening. Aho is a Cane. Habs just made him an even more insanely valuable player now. With the production he has put out in his short amount of time, and the upfront bonuses he will be paid. It would take like 8 1st round picks for that beauty. He's like McDavid valuable. If they offered Point that deal, it would have had Tampa celebrating like they won the 1st round of the playoffs.

Tbh, he should’ve offered on Laine or Connor because Winnipeg is in a cap pinch

he's a UFA in 5 years at just 26
in the long run we screwed you to help ourselves lol

i doubt MB ever thought he could get it but he made sure he'll have a shot when he's UFA.

i think this was more to set the bar saying this is what Aho's worth so maybe if he offers 10.5 to Laine he takes it without having to spend four 1st's everyone thought would be guaranteed for Laine to sign. i could be wrong and it could be just an added benefit of him making a weak offer sheet , who knows .

i honestly doubt we were in on all the UFA's
the only ones i heard he spoke with in MTL was Duchene ,Simmonds and Johansson.
outside that it was likely him calling and kicking tire's on a guy like Lee .Panarin or Nyquist but nothing serious , no in person meetings .

MB traditionally botches every UFA he signs , even when he wins with a Radulov , he loses him.
how we get good player is when others undervalue them like Tatar , Danault Petry,Kulak or Byron

By Bergavin reaction at the press conference the other day, when he was asked about Anders Lee, id say they were in on him as well, got outbid by NYI. He was probably there second target if they missed on Duchene

I agree that the Aho signing was a screw job for the Canes, I doubt Waddell was looking for a short term deal, now Aho is UFA in 5 years, (most likely traded in the 4th year when the Canes get scared of him walking). Bergevin is an idiot but this wasn't about getting Aho in a Habs jersey it was about something else (such as setting the market value, sorry Marner, Laine, Rantanen etc: now your dream of 10+ million are over).

saw it , he half listened to the reporter then answered before he finished and said '' i tell you , we talk at everyone really , we were on the phones all day''
as opposed to when asked about Duchene

'yes we have a meeting with Matt tomorrow , he seems very excited. ' then he goes on to explain why Matt Duchene chose number 9 .

Simmonds when asked he out right said yes we had a meeting with Wayne(didnt say much more , didnt sound like it went well )

Zero chance we were seriously targeting lee
we're off loading players like him at a similar age each year for the past 3 years
we've only brought in 1 older UFA and we got stuck with a dud .
Taking on a guy who's great in the regular season but injured for or doesnt show up in the post season doesnt interest us unless he can play center or is 25 or under .

Tatar , Petry , and even Danault will all go in the next 2 years.
they'll be replaced by 6'3 210lb Poehling , 6'2 190 lbs Kotkanemi , 6'1 192lbs Brook and 5'11 183lbs Suzuki over the course of the next seasons and a half .
With Olofsson developing as a Possession Center best known for his Physicality and Checking another year or 2 and 6'2 196lb Olofsson will be over here on 4th line locking it down like Scissons does for NSH.

Thats a good point i hadn't thought of that. Maybe thats also why Bergavin not worried about other GMs being pissed about a offer sheet. He actually helped those teams by setting the market. I think its different team by team tho, like Marner will get paid more in Toronto, then he would if he played on a different team. Just because Toronto salary structure is bloated with Taveras and Matthews. He will still definitely get less now tho

Too bad the Habs couldn't find a way to draft the younger Suzuki brother.

I'm not a Cane fan, and Bergevin didn't screw them at all. All the Canes have to do now is sign Aho to another contract before that contract is up, or they trade him for a huge haul. Whether he meant to or not, Bergevin helped set the market even more after San Jose signed Timo Meier. Whatever his intentions
were did everyone a favor and benefited the whole league with all their RFAs. Aho's contract is now the blueprint for elite RFA players; especially since UFAs are getting PAID.
