He wanted to leave. As SammyT suggested Leafs have other to replace him,,,,Mikheyev, Bracco, Korshov. Relationship? Two years was enough. Time for others to assume leadership roles.

If he would sign the league min like Spezza to play on the 4th line I would do that for one year. I agree that Mikheyev likely makes the team and he is in the top 9. Korshov is a Marlie this year and would take Marleau over him right now. Bracco should not play on the 4th line, so if he doesn't make the top 9 he is back in the AHL. No issue with one more year of Marleau because he has the experience like Spezza to step into the top 9 if there is an injury. It is San Jose or Toronto for Marleau and San Jose hasn't signed him yet.

I'd be ok with him coming back at leauge min and if he was regulated to 4th line duties and maybe some pp2 minutes. But I can't imagine that Babs would do that, so it's a hard no from me.

Besides, like Pal says, 2 years was lots of time, and appreciated. Best to leave it at that
