As a Pens fan I look at that Johnson trade and first I think you're out of your mind for the Pens to basically auction off the future for the next three years, but if I break it down it's not as crazy as I thought, but I can't see any world where the Habs do that trade.

1) It may take the Pens tacking a 1st on to any deal that moves Johnson, so I can see JJ + 1st to any team he gets dealt to.

2) Then basically a 1st + 2nd and Jarry for Tatar with nearly $2M retained.

Um... yes please. Bergevin gets fired after this deal, but yes, yes, yes

While I disagree, I see where you're coming from.
I basically want to rip out any players who have value and aren't in the long-term plans now while eating bad contracts to fill roster slots for now.

I'm pretty sure this a self-hating Habs fan, because they're pretty much great trades for every team not including the Habs.

So Tatar doesn't have value, but JJ does? Don't get me wrong, if Bergevin actually felt that way I wouldn't argue with him for even a second.

Look at it this way:
If I would ask for more you'd tell me to hit the road.
If I ask for less and recover tons of assets in the meantime while making room for the kids (both on the roster and salary wise).

Maybe additional picks could be added to balance value, but the overall theme is still there.

Opposite:
Tatar has tons of value (esp. retained).
JJ doesn't.

I think we're both on the same page here.

Hence the 2 (split) 1sts.

But if you think Tatar has tons of value, why are you trading him? Or are you actually a Penguins fan who really hates the Habs?

Because he has 2 years left until he's UFA and I want Caufield to take his spot (after those 2 years).
I don't mind having some of the kids play for spots or eat bad contracts temporarily until they do (instead).

Sell high and try to buy low on some of other kids who have had disappointing careers thus far: bennett, fischer, etc..

MTL has plenty of mediocre forwards who are on the last year of the contract. They can easily dump one or two of those guys to make room for Caufield.

I think that the most valuable ones are 2 (those mostly being dumped here).
Danault
Tatar
Petry

Yeah, but why dump talented players? Dump guys like Thompson, Weise, Weal, Peca or Hudon. You can easily move one or two of those guys for a 5th or 6th rounder to a team needs 4th line depth. Caufield will be on an ELC, so moving only ONE of those guys makes room. Wouldn't you rather see Caufield on a team that has both Tatar and Danault?

Danault was an elite two way centerman last year. Maybe not Barkov or Bergeron but easily the best thing we've had since Pleky in his hay day. Your getting rid of him for what reason exactly? To get Fischer and a couple picks? A winger which we already have oodles of and picks that we already oodles of. You know what we don't have? Centerman capable of winning draws and playing against the other teams top centerman and actually being able to play up to par with that teams top guy. Domi can't win faceoffs to save his life and isn't particularly strong defensively. KK is still developing. Who else???? I like Fischer but we don't need him, especially at the cost of Danault.

Byron for Bennett is an ok trade but not convinced Calgary would do it.

Reilly for 4th ok whatever sure. Not big enough to really matter so its fine.

Tatar trade............... what the hell is that? Jack johnson has negative value. Rutherford cannot trade this guy without sweetening the pot. Nobody wants him! So yeah sure two 1sts are great but they will be playoff 1sts as Pittsburgh still has all the tools to atleast make the playoffs for those two years so there not higher end 1sts. Tristan Jarry is not a player the Habs need. Sure he's an alright prospect but we have our starting two goalies already and oodles in the AHL. Tatar just two seasons ago brought back a 1st, 2nd and a 3rd. I would rather trade him for whatever similar to that we can get and NOT take on JJ who is another burden we already have on this team alongside Alzner. There isn't even a spot for JJ to play if we wanted to...... This makes no sense.

Lehkonen trade is another head scratcher. Lehkonen is club/cost controlled for the team for another 3-4 years. Eakin is a UFA. Do I really need to explain the reasoning behind this? Eakin is almost 30 years old. We're getting older for one year, for what exactly? Just keep Danault who is better player hands down.

As opposed to all the renown fans on this board? You're a dummy.

You don't need to be an avid watcher of any team to understand the concept of asset management. You don't get rid of effective players and replace them with mediocrity. Trust me, I've seen my team do it. It doesn't work out well.

Tatar for Johnson? Are you kidding me? You're now paying nearly $5M for Jack Johnson. If you want to dump Tatar to move salary or make room for a player then you move him for futures, not one of the worst defenseman in the league. ASSET MANAGEMENT
