Rantanen contract

Description
So I should start buy saying that I like what sakic did this offseason, I will miss Barrie as will the team but he just didnt fit into the future team..

Everything I've read in the last few months was saying that rantanen was looking for a deal between landeskog and MacKinnon, then after last season he was looking for term around 7.5-8 per year. Now I've just read an article dated on July 26/19 saying that sakic is using the aho contract and the draisaitl contract as comparables.

I'm venturing a guess that it will land something like this 5 mill for 2 years (subban-ish bridge deal), or 7 years at 8.75 per. I hope he signs for long term because with a bridge deal that ends when landeskog and makar deal is up it could be a nightmare for barnaby Joe.

I think sakic is either doing a bridge or 7/8... he stated that in his press conference after the season

Only time will tell but that is less % of cap than any of the top players. Salic ain’t sitting anyone out. Only stupid fans think that is a real option.
Please come back when he signs so we can see who was wrong but I will stick to my number

It's absolutely a real option and has happened before, zadorov missed training camp, oreilly missed time, nylander missed plenty of time.

8,750,000 is 10.7% of the cap, that's around what draisaitl got and more than aho.

Missing time and sitting out for the year is 2 totally different things. Nylander ended up get 10 million last year for calling dubas bluff

By sitting out I wasnt saying the entire season, I meant sitting out until a contract can be agreed upon.

Again why I think that dubas is among the worst gms in the league, he had nylander by the short and curlies, kapanen was playing in his spot and producing the didnt need nylander, he could have said here is your deal take it or leave it... but instead he signs him to a long term almost 7 mill deal, then they guy comes in and completely disappoints...and it was only 10 mill because it was prorated for the salary cap

Nylander's annual average is 7.5 mil per for 6 years. Because of the rules of signing mid season the CAP hit ended up being 10 mil for year 1 and 7 mil for the remaining 5 years.

With signing bonuses it goes without saying that Nylander got paid. But his cap hit was only 10 million because it was prorated. The cap hit doesn't reflect the actual salary if it starts during the year. Hence why Vegas' player Jimmy Schuldt signed his 925,000 contract but it was at the end of the year and got prorated to 6,567,500 on cap friendly.

I doubt it's all the same people, marner deserves a good deal like the rest of them... I think that's a very good deal, marner deserves around the same but his dad thinks he should get a Matthew's deal

You're probably right. I guess with the media we get more Leaf's exposure. Id be mored scared if I was a Vancouver or Calgary fan if I'm honest. At least the leafs have put aside close to 10m for Marner, while those teams have as a comparable much less to sign their RFAs

@JeffW If Rantenen is signed to 5 years, isn't that buying up 1 year of his UFA? He's played 3 seasons already and 4 more seasons would make him a free agent at the end of it. The 5th year of that contract would be a year in which he could have been a free agent.

I agree the Rants number should be about 8.75 to 9 on a long term. I've been saying 8.75 for some time but it seems to get laughed at. Still can't understand why tbh.
