Leafs 2019-20 Managing cap after Marner signing

Created by: Gauss
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 13, 2019

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I am not interested in comments on who makes the team or on putting together the lines. This is just for discussing the cap management.

Putting Hyman and Dermott on the LTIR to start the season allows for a 23 man roster - no problem to start the season.

Dermott comes back and we send down/waive Holl or Harpur of another ELC/700K defenseman that made the team out of camp - still have 23 man roster.

Problem comes when Hyman comes off LTIR. We will have to send down/waive three players to make room for Hyman. 23-3+1 = 21 player roster. Does the team carry an extra forward or an extra defense.

By the time Hymen is back the team should have an idea how Codi Ceci will work out. If it is not working out he will be traded for whatever they can get - only a 7th round pick if necessary and that will solve the cap problem for this year. The team will have 23 man roster.

Also maybe there is an injury of one of the higher paid players before Hyman is back and they go on the LTIR - no trades needed - still can have a 23 man roster.

Maybe Johnsson or Kapanen are not playing like they did last year and traded to make cap room. Or Nylander struggles again (yes it is a possibility albeit a low possibility) and he is traded. You never know what can happen.

Hyman could also be the one traded.

As of opening day the team will be able to have a 23 man roster.

On a side note. The team will not be able to call up players from the Marlies if a someone is injured unless that player goes on the Long term IR. That is because the team is already using the max LTIR room available.

If they are going to try the 21 man roster I think they have to keep a Dman. In an emergency they can always hop on the wing for the 4th line. Would rather that than a forward trying to play defence on the bottom pair.

If you send Hutch down, and roll with 1 goalie, you can have an extra forward AND an extra dman!

But honestly, you've gotta think that this is a precursor to a trade. 21 man roster on a west coast trip sounds terrifying.

Keep a player that doesnt need waivers as the extra man, doesnt matter if hes a forward or dman. Paper transaction him to the AHL for whatever you need to call up. For a west coast trip, fly the 22nd guy anyway and just dont put him on the roster. A 21 man roster is do-able, it will just take some creative thinking.

There probably will be a trade but it does not have to happen until Hyman is ready to come back. The team will also not rush Hyman back to make sure he is completely healed. I don't see a trade happening until end of October/beginning of November giving them enough time to evaluate the team as it stands.

I am pretty sure you need 2 goalies at all time. 20 man roster allowed is 12/6/2

If it were me, I would never roll with 23, I would go with 22 the entire season, and bank the daily cap number in case you need to add at the TDL.

13/7/2 this season

Because they are using LTIR there is no banking cap room.

I thought that was for bonuses but that makes sense
