Big trade with Habs

Created by: rockybaker
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 4, 2019
Published: Nov. 4, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Leafs get a much needed partner for Reilly and a bit of cap relief. Habs get some much needed skill/scoring from a young guy on a long term deal.

I'm sure you could add a pick or something as a sweetner if need be. These might make good bones though.

It's a novel idea, but I can't see those two teams ever doing a blockbuster and I'm not sure Petry is really and truly the 1D defender the Leafs need. Plus the Habs won't trade him because if Weber goes down, they are well and truly screwed on RHD.

petry is a 31 year old dman with a 2 years left on his contract, including this year. That's some pretty garbage asset management. Look for a jones/johanssen style trade, not this crap.

Nylander (with his contract) are not exactly in high demand around the league. Petry doesn't have to be the #1, that's Rielly. He just has to keep up and hold the fort. Also, Nylander might be a heck of a natural talent and I know the stats nutheads are gonna tell me he's the greatest player ever...but am I the only person who remembers his playoff performances from the past 2 years? He's too scared of being hit and becomes utterly useless. Remember what the goal is here guys. You don't win the cup in the regular season. Rielly has NEVER had a competent partner.

I'm not saying this trade is likely. I'm saying it could benefit both teams.

You can say the same thing about Marner, Matthews and plenty of other leafs the last 2 playoffs... It's not Nylander alone who's the problem, the team collectively has to be better in the playoffs. If they were to trade Nylander, I would only do it for a long term value contract in return, not 1.5 years of Petry.

At first glance the age difference makes me think this is uneven but then the more I look at it the more it makes sense for the Leafs and less for the Habs. The Habs already have too many forwards and not enough solid defense losing their #1 would be a huge setback while Nylander may become a game breaker he isn't one yet so Idk what he would bring to an already crowded forward group(this year anyway). While the Leafs solidify their defence and get much needed cap relief, I know losing a young talent is a tough pill to swallow but they already have so many in abundance.

Find me long-term contracted d-man who fits under the cap, would fit as a partner to Rielly and who would take the trade for Nylander. Also, keeping all stats aside, Nylander is the most scared hockey player I'v seen in a long time during the playoffs. The trade would rid the worst one and send a message to the others.

hah... The leafs are so soft it pisses me off. So maybe I have those glasses on but Nylander costs the most. Skill for skill doesn't match but the salary does... and I need toughness on the wings.
