8x8? What would Pietrangelo deserve on a 8 year deal, 5 trillion? Muzzin is great, and I love him but that is insanity.

That's the rumored rate for his next contract. I don't think he is worth that, but that's what teams are willing to pay. If Pietrangelo goes to FA, I imagine he will get over 10 Million.

agree with the bracco comment; it would be a 1 or 2 year deal that low.

don't agree with the muzzin comment. he's 31 and will be steadily slowing down.

spezza won't be re-signed.

Well I think you are taking a different rumour and placing it on Muzzin. Barrie was mentioned as wanting 8x8 on his next deal, although that was just speculation. 8x8 for a 30 year old is just nuts.

Yeah, if it gets raised, this definitely alters the equation -- I don't think there was a raise, if any this season from last though.

It was raised by 2 mil from last season to this season

Also when you are 30, I think the cap hit goes down the longer the contract. It protects the team from having a really bad contract down the road and gives the player security. He'll get more money the shorter the term.

Players 30 YO get 7 year deals in FA and from teams all the time. A DFD that can put up 40 Points is worth 8 Million in today's NHL

I think it will level off. After the first 3 years it will be a higher AAV simply because it's his prime years. Maybe after that it will go down.

Yeah and how many times does a big money contract for an older player blow up in the face of the teams that do these.

Lucic, Backes, Neal, Laad, Alzner, Perry, etc etc. People just don't learn from the past.

We are talking about a guy who is already 30, he'll be 31 to start this contact, his prime is over. Muzzin is going to be serviceable for a long time but he's probably never going to be as good as he is now.

I think he will still be top 4 quality for the next few years. Defenders don't tend to age as fast as forwards do. Most defensemen can play at their peak until around 33-34 and slowly start to decline at that age. Especially a guy who's game doesn't revolve around speed and relies on something that doesn't age: His IQ. I think he will be a NHL defensemen until his late 30's

Not saying it would be a good contract, but some team out there would be willing to give him that money.

So many people say that and yet the number of defenceman over the age of 30 is getting smaller every year. There are only something like 10 playing who are over 35 and total over 30 is around 50, league wide. The reality is, defenceman hit their stride about 2 years later than forwards but to play past 33 is becoming a rarity.

Zdeno Chara 42
Andy Greene 37
Jay Bouwmeester 36
Mark Giordano 36
Duncan Keith 36
Johnny Boychuk 35
Ryan Suter 34
Mike Green 34
Shea Weber 34
Brent Burns 34
Alex Goligoski 33
Alexander Edler 33
Keith Yandle 33
Anton Stralman 33

14 players aged over 33 that are still in their teams top 4. Not saying it's a good thing, but defensemen don't trail off as fast as forwards. They might start to decline at the same time, but they don't regress as fast.

Many of those guys are shadows of their former selves.

Well sure they are, they are at the age or many years past where they start declining, but the fact is they are still in the top 4 despite 4-5 years of regressing.

If you pay a guy late into his 30's with big money knowing full well it's going to be a bad contract you are terrible GM. It's just so rare to see a guy keep his skills much past 33.

Once again, those guys are all examples of players who played into the top 4 past their Prime years. It's never going to be a good idea to give a guy a long term contract like that, but it's feasible.

But some of them are also bad contracts that are hurting teams. Like Seabrook

I guess not, He signed an a 1 year contract in between, but he was still super young at the time and showed NHL potential
