Trade with the Wild

Created by: MountRoyal514
Team: 2019-20 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 25, 2019
Published: Nov. 25, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Big Finnish rental to play on an all-Finland line, mentor KK on how to improve as a top 6 centre, a healthy body to fill in for injuries and provide depth for the rest of the season and hopefully the playoffs. Obvious Koivu connection to Montreal for good media optics even moreso as the trade happens after koivu play's his 1000th game with the Wild. Obviously doesn't fix the LD issue but could be a fit.

We are not cup contenders, so we won’t move asset for a rental who’s not even good

I'd do it from the Wild's perspective, but it all depends on Koivu's willingness to waive his NMC. He loves MN.

Koivu is still amazing defensively. He has fallen off hard in the offensive zone, but he can still make the occasional good play. If you need a face off wizard and a great PK'er, Koivu is still among the best. I'd say a 2nd is pretty close to fair for him

I totally agree, mtl got a 2nd for Plekanec, you’ll get a 2nd, just not MTL, but a team who’s contenders

you're pretending only clear contenders in NOV are going to be buyers in Feburary
that tells me you must be used to being wrong as a lot always happens between now and then .

MTL has its issues but a lot of that can be fixed by adding more size.
adding Koivu's size to 6'3 Kotkanemi and 6'4 Armia's line gives MTL a line that can physically wear down opponents .

personally i'd love to pick up Koivu and Clifford for the right price
Romanov will be up soon and Romanov-Fleury would be a physically dominating force .

Our D lead the NHL D in scoring with 13 goals the first 20 games so what we need is someone to punish players and block shots to tighten up our D. (Kulak wont hit and doesnt block shots while Reilly only blocks shots and nothing else . )

Clifford would be the best fit thought
one of the top 5 players in the league who can produce while also being a Enforcer

When has Clifford regularly produced? His career year was 21pts. Who is the guy that is "used to being wrong" again? I agree he would be worth picking up for a playoff run. Could offload one of those many 4ths for him. I agree Kulak and Reilly are kind of useless and I agree a lot can change and that MTL could use a Top 2LHD. A lot will happen from now until February, for sure. I think there are really only a handful of teams you an really count out of the playoffs at this point. I think Montreal has a chance to make the playoffs but as a wild card or #3 in the division at best.

I think the Koivu trade is a good trade if you're in a decent spot to make the playoffs. Montreal has a strong prospect pool right now, with a few of them claiming roster spots already and still a lot of mid-draft picks in this upcoming draft so moving a 2nd really wouldn't hurt them all that much, especially if you bring in a Finnish influence like Koivu for Lehkonen, KK and Armia. It is also a good idea to wait and sign him in the offseason. But maybe you only need him for 25GP in the season and a playoff run. Some intangibles are worth picks. Iginla (though he wasn't traded for picks and spent 2 1/2 years with the team) was a phenomenal influence on Landy and Mack. He deserved to win a cup but whatevs #justsuttermanagmentthings

MB isn't Kyle Dubas, you don't trade a 2nd round pick for a rental guy who will play 4th line. Maybe to a true cup contender like Washington or Boston.

A 2nd round pick isn't the right price.

Well, I'd be thrilled to get him for a 3rd, or a 3rd & a 4th. Maybe Minny doesn't accept that. Maybe Ikonen and a 3rd, even better.

Ikonen have no value due to injury, MTL will just keep him and he will jump in the AHL in 2021-2022

I don't know if I'd want to sign Koivu when he is yet a whole year older with another season on wear & tear on his body, I think his value is this year as a mentor, as an injury stop-gap, as a warm body to keep younger players like Poehling in the AHL to develop fully, as a good influence on Kotkaniemi, and a veteran with size and good defensive awareness to help out the PK to get us into the playoffs etc. My preference would be to grab him for a 2021 6th but not sure Minny would bite Sticking Out Tongue

Koivu will replace Thompson next year if he’s good playing 4th line

He doesn't even fit on the team. We would be upgrading from Thompson, who has been lights out this year. There really isn't a spot for him on the team. Montreal should just continue on course or even trade at the TD.

So you trade two good picks for a 4th line center? I'd rather not. Give it to Poehling or another kid that earns that spot.
