We're trading Cody Ceci for a guy in the minors? How is that supposed to help?

To be honest, if it were a 1 for 1 I might think about it. Santini is big and physical and still has some untapped skills. Skates well for a big boy. Most attractive is that he is signed cheap through next year.

The down side... if someone gets hurt I don’t want him in the top 4.

I understand what your saying but upgrading the backup is gonna cost something, this is as low cost as you get.

Value is there in this trade, as long as Ingram is ready.

Agreed.
Still worth the gamble to upgrade the backup.

Nashville declines this trade. Think they are looking for saris to be the starter in the future.

Leafs have hutch. I think he is capable but if something comes up and the price is right then dubas can make a move. I don’t see any reason to force it.

As @Trickster said, there's a cost to upgrading the backup goaltending and this is about as cheap as it comes.

And the likely outcome is Andersen is worn out by the time the playoffs roll around.
I don't believe for a second the Leafs get out of the first round without a fresh goalie in Andersen.

I don’t buy into that crap... “worn out”. So because Andersen plays an extra 5-10 games over the course of 6 months we are lead to believe he can’t handle the first 7 games of the playoffs? Maybe we need to sit him in the press box the whole season if we hope to win a cup. Up to 28 games to win a cup where starters are ridden the whole time.

Well you can buy or not buy whatever you want. The analytics lean towards using the starter closer to a 50-50 load for regular season games.

It's why tandem goaltending is becoming a thing...slowly. If you consider how often Andersen has to be at his best, that has to be taxing.

I haven't said anything here that should be all that shocking but I suppose it is?

No analytics do not show that. Would love to see some of these analytics.

Holtby and binnington both ridden hard and win cups. In fact holtby’s best playoff stats were after a 73 game regular season. Quick wins the cup in spectacular fashion after 69 games played in the regular season. Fleury, 62 games Stanley cup champ.

Goalie tandems aren’t “becoming a thing” they used to “be a thing” it actually works well to keep them both competitive.

The year the Capitals won the cup didnt Holtby lose his starting job to Grubauer ?
How many games did Binnington play in the season? 30ish?

What about Boston?
Rask and Halak, tandem.

I think tandems are more of thing then you think, and seems to be going more that way then less if look at teams around the NHL.

How many teams have goalie they prepared to send out 60ish times now? 7???

Holtby did lose his job near the end of the cup season to Grubaur and Grubaur did start the playoffs getting a starts. Holtby eventually got his job back in the second round...but maybe that was enough of a break for him?

As for Binnington, I think he played more than 30 games but whatever his number is...it's a far cry from the pace Andersen is at for 70 games.

Binnington was called up in December last year. Holtby had 54 reg season games when he won the cup. Rask was playing with Thomas when he won the cup.

A lot of these tandems are just younger goalies taking over. Yes halak gets a lot of starts, and why not. He has been great. Same goes with the islanders who lost their starter.

I think what the “analytics” show is absolutely nothing at all. No correlation between starts and playoff performance.

Andersen is on pace for 63 not 70.

So why are their so many few teams playing goalies 60 games a year? It's not even close to half the league.

Its NHL is definitely trending towards tandem goaltending in general.

Andersen had 60 starts last season which was 8th. Not exactly a stat that jumps out.

Tandem goaltending is 50/50. Some teams have great backups so they throw them in a bit more. The only team running a successful tandem is the islanders. Other teams are strugggling to find consistent goaltending and I doubt the league is trending that way.

When a team has a star goalie who is playing great they ride them for roughly 60 games a year. That leaves over a quarter of the starts going elsewhere so having a good backup is still important. But the idea that if Andersen sits an extra 5 games over 6 months he all of the sudden can rip off 20-28 games in the spring where he couldn't Before is just dumb.

This is coming from a goaltender.
