NYR would take Kevan Miller and retain half on Kreider. Bruins would have to keep the NHLer in Bjork and sub him for Lauko or someone like that

Rangers would need more, especially For taking on backes deal.

His deal is for 1 more year at $6 million with $4 actually owed. If they wait till after bonus payouts, its $3 million owed. Not a bad deal for a team looking to reach the cap floor. Boston could also buy him out carry a $4 hit next year and $1 mill the following year.

I understand how a 1st is the cost for just taking Backes back in a trade (see Orpik/Marleau/Bickell trades). But what does that have to do with Kreider?

You'd honestly have to add another 1st here to make it work.

Normal value for Kreider is going to be 1st +

Except it isn’t. See Clarkson, Mason, Hossa trades. Or a litany of others.

Every trade is different, the circumstances around them are different, the orgs are different with different needs and philosophies. Using Marleau as an example is ridiculous as that was an extreme case and an anomaly. Orpik was moved with Grubbauer for a 2nd. Bickell was moved with Turbo for a 2nd and 3rd.

Backes will be moved with a mid round pick and prospect. Or moved with a 1st and prospects with something significant coming back. Or will be bought out. They are not overpaying to move him, it serves them no purpose.

There is no urgency on B’s part. They can sign everyone next year other than Halak who they were likely to lose anyway.

Just don't see how that relates to Kreider...at all... He's not just a piece you can throw in. It'd be the equivalent of me including Marc Staal, who has more value than Backes....how much would you want in return for including Staal? lol

Has nothing to do with Kreider. Your statement was Backes required a 1st to take him and then compensate for Kreider. I don’t agree with the beginning of that statement.

I agree the offer here is light.

1st, Bjork, 3rd piece (prospect or mid round pick), Backes with 2.5 retention is probably about right.

However, Kreider does not play RW which is where the need is. They will likely only be able to make 1 significant move. It has to be for a RW.

Backes is unlikely to waive NTC in season. Bruins unlikely to move 1st. Nothing about this works for either team.

Yeah, tbh I don't think Kreider to Boston works very well. Kreider is pretty bad on his off wing. Which means he or Debrusk would be bumped to 3LW (not good) or Debrusk would move to off wing. Dreger says the return will be a 1st + B prospect. I think most tend to use something around top ~75ish prospects in the league as A prospects. The next 75->150 as B prospects and so on.

The Bruins have 1 "A" prospect (Stud), 2 "B" prospects (Vaakanainen, Beecher), a few on the cusp of being B guys (Lauko, Steen) and a lot of AHL guys (Bjork, Frederic, Cehlarik, JFK, Zboril)

And I don't think you can afford to do a trade for a 1st + Beecher in the same way that Carolina can afford to do a trade for 1st + Kuokkanen. Just don't think it's a good match.

But if you wanted to do a Backes for Staal type swap since contractually they're in the same spot that could be fun.
