Better for the Long Term

Created by: netminder71
Team: 2019-20 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 13, 2020
Published: Jan. 13, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Sure the Caps have been good at times this year, and lucky too, and also kinda crappy (like recently).

But here's how you "fix" the team to be competitive for the next 3-4 years and it may be slightly painful to us fans, but probably has to happen.

This is ALL now until trade deadline stuff...

Plus on a side note, these moves open up more than enough cap space to keep Gudas next year, re-sign Backie and eventually Ovi to deals thru their respective careers, AND the next year or two you'll pave the way for Protas, McMichael, and Leason to be the offense youth movement...not to mention Alexeyev and Fehervary on the back end. A new era for the Caps as they let some aging stars finish their careers.
Trades
1.
WSH
  1. Bennett, Sam
  2. 2020 3rd round pick (CGY)
  3. 2021 1st round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
Calgary is doing well with Talbot, but it is a place close to home and with the cap space and talent pool to use a true franchise #1. God speed Holts, thank you for the Cup, for "The Save," and for being a generally great human being.
CGY
  1. Djoos, Christian
  2. Holtby, Braden
Additional Details:
a) He's a pending UFA, b) he's been struggling since the Cup run, c) he wants Bob money or more and if he was playing like Holtby circa a few years ago he would deserve it, but he's not. Put the kid in net and go forward. Have Cops to back him up, if it screws us for the post-season, so be it...Holtby isn't playing well enough to steal a playoff series (see last year).
2.
WSH
  1. 2020 4th round pick (CGY)
LAK
  1. Jensen, Nick
Additional Details:
Another failed experiment. I liked the idea when they got him but he isn't the stable defender they thought he'd be. He's awful actually. But the cheap deal helps to offload him somewhere.
3.
WSH
  1. 2020 5th round pick (VAN)
VAN
  1. Pánik, Richard
Additional Details:
Panik was a failed experiment. He's a guy on a cheaper friendly deal so maybe worth a late pick???

I understand your desire to move those players but I think you're optimistic on the returns you might get for some of them. In particular, LA has no interest in Panik with all of the young forwards they want to try out and Ottawa isn't giving you a second for Jensen. The best you can hope for him is a fourth or fifth from one of the SoCal teams.

I'll take a 4th or a 5th...probably right on your end...and still I'd dump Panik and Jensen somewhere...so I adjusted the teams and return for Jensen and Panik on your thoughtful analysis...I'd take a half-used $5 subway gift card for Jensen these days.

Full disclosure -- I was a HUGE fan of acquiring him last year before you guys swept in and stole him away (ha, ha). Once again, proving the accuracy of that old cliche: be careful what you wish for.

Grubranson got a 5th? Jensen and Pánik value has to be slightly better than that right? Ha hopefully

A 5th for Jensen... Eli just kicked a bunch of puppies. Jensen should be able yo net the Caps Doughty w/25% retained and a 3rd.

Except that Gudbranson has turned out to be quite valuable to the Ducks.

Point being that he was considered a cap dump prior. This would be identical but with higher valued players

No one with a brain looked at Guddy as a cap dump.
Guddy plays defense. There is never enough defense in the league. You could be extraordinary horrible at it, but could still find a team that needs you.
Just look around the league.

Panik on the other hand is a winger, and those are a dime a dozen.

I think Panik might be able to turn it around in a different system given more opportunity.
But he's also played bad in what 4 organizations now. TB TOR Chicago, and now WSH. He had one good year in chicago and the wheels fell off. He did ok in AZ.

Hard to think anyone want on that contract long term.
That's the problem with signing wingers. They are so replaceable teams don't have to stretch on them. It's not like defense where people get hurt for the year and it's a scramble because no one can find a guy who can play even marginally well.
