Martinez = Joseph and the not-this-year second. What's the compensation for getting you out of the Johnson contract?

A 2nd + Good prospect is fairly high for an Alec Martinez trade.

He's regressed a bit in recent years and still carries a substantial cap hit. He's also 32.

Meanwhile, Johnson, while still terrible, is significantly less terrible than he was last year and the year before. Teams wanted him as a free agent two summers ago. His value might not be perceived as negatively by certain teams as it should be.

A 2nd and a prospect is pretty much what everyone thinks is the price, not to mention any bidding wars that go on. And "substantial cap hit"? The Kings will retain if they need to, getting it down to 2mil, but even then a top-4 defender at 4mil is hardly "substantial".

And regardless of whether or not Johnson is "significantly less terrible than he was last year", you're still using the word "terrible" to describe his play, which is never a good starting point. And THAT contract is substantial, in term if not in cap hit. And I think the cap hit is significantly bad for the level of play he provides.

Johnson is a year older, signed for two more years than Martinez, and is substantially inferior to Martinez, who is still one of the premier shot-blockers in the NHL. My point is that Joseph and a 2021 second (not a 2020 second, which is significant) is right for Martinez alone. You can't just toss Johnson and his three-year cap hit into the trade and think no one will care.

If a team views him as closer to a neutral asset, then you pretty much can. Again, Anaheim and Detroit wanted to sign him two years ago when he was coming off a terrible season where he was healthy scratched. Anaheim took Gudbranson and gave up a pick. These players are objectively bad by every metric but there are still teams that value them for some stupid combination of leadership, size, grit, etc. Hell, Tampa gave Dan Girardi a contract after he was worse than any of these guys.

That may be true of another team, but rebuilding teams like Los Angeles or Anaheim can't afford to devote one roster slot to the press box. They need to get their players on the ice for experience and evaluation every night.

Anaheim literally just did this like three months ago. And rebuilding teams inevitably always want to surround their young guys with more veteran "leadership." Look at Vancouver and the Islanders giving a ton of money to fourth line types in recent years.

I’ve been doing POJ and that 2nd for Martinez at 50% retained so idk.

Yea, I place this trade firmly in the "NO" category from the Kings perspective.
