Assuming Holland does nothing until Draft

Created by: BeterChiarelli

Description
Starting to think Old Dutch was serious when he said that the only way for this team to do anything is to build through the draft. The only real commitment he'd be making this summer (beyond the Kassian overpay) is sticking to a draft-first plan and finding a long-term #3C in Pageau. Galchenyuk gets a "prove it" deal at half of what he made this season; hard to imagine he finds much more elsewhere.

AHL Setup:

Benson - Carrick - Lavoie
Mascherin - McLeod - Maksimov
Adams - Cave - Currie
Esposito - Rasanen - Safin

Pouliot - Persson
Samorukov - Berglund
Broberg - Kemp
Skinner - Lagace

Rodrigue looks to play the whole season in the ECHL: this will be the season where the organization finally decides what Skinner is and whether or not they'll be moving forward with him. Next year's Condors tandem projects to be Konovalov/Rodrigue.

1st and 2nd Rounds of the Draft:
#19. (LW) Rodion Amirov (Ufa, MHL)
#39 (via MTL). (RW) Jack Quinn (Ottawa, OHL)
#50. (C) Justin Sourdiff (Vancouver, WHL)

I'd be looking at every avenue possible to send Neal to Seattle at the end of the 20-21 season: no 2021/2022 pick would be considered untouchable, but signed prospects or players would ideally be off the table. The Galchenyuk and Perreault money should cover extensions for Benson, Nugent-Hopkins, and Yamamoto, as well as cover the cost of bringing Lavoie up to play #3RW. The savings from Neal should be enough to find a proper #1LW for McDavid, and the remainder can be thrown at a backup goaltender.

The names and dollar figures below aren't the important part really. It's more a demonstration of what Oilers fans were sold when Holland came in. Bad contracts needed to be dealt with while prospects and draft assets were collected before this team really started to turn things around. The way this season has gone has been nothing but a bonus for the fans and the players. It's shaky, and by no means an immediate cup-contender on paper, but I'm cautiously willing to admit that the franchise is at the least pointing in the right direction now. Should be an annual playoff team now?

Amirov at 19 would be really good, so would Sourdiff at 50, I'd consider going Marat Khusnutdinov at 39 tho, if available

A few of the places I use for rankings have Khusnutdinov between 85-100. If he's available in the late third or earth fourth rounds, I wouldn't say no to Edmonton moving picks from 2021 to get another midrounder this year and snag him. Size is a bit of a concern given Yamamoto's presence on the roster, but if the kid produces it's a no-brainer.

He can definitely hold his own, he's probably the best two way/defense forward in this draft, with none of your "big three" being good defenseively I figured he'd be a good pick (plus most of what I see has him 31-60)

From what I've seen you don't need to worry about Yamamoto's size his skating and skills more than make up for his size. So taking on another smaller player shouldn't be a big deal.

Agreed. Rocco Grimaldi is another such player- in fact, I wouldn't mind if Holland signed him in the offseason.

I like Rocco he won't put up points Yamamoto but he loves the dirty areas kind of like Dino Ciccarelli.
