The Deadline

Created by: CuyahogaKid
Team: 2019-20 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 20, 2020
Published: Feb. 20, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Ryan Johnson and Mattias Sammuelson are the Sabres two best defense prospects on the right side and in time in combination with Rasmus Dahlin, could become one of the better units in the league, which could leave the 24 year old Lawrence Pilut out even though he is NHL ready and capable.

Buffalo acquires help with forwards who have the capability to play the middle and right wing both which are needs in Gagner and Namestnikov in this retool of the lineup as well as Anisimov
Trades
1.
BUF
  1. Claesson, Fredrik
  2. Kuokkanen, Janne
Additional Details:
Kuokkanen seems to be the forgotten prospect in Carolina and his having a career year in the AHL.

J.S dea, Amerks leading scorer goes over to help the Checkers who is 35 points in 47 games.

Kuokkanen has drawn comparisons to Kasperi Kapanen and should get an immediate look in Buffalo if traded
CAR
  1. Dea, Jean-Sébastien
  2. Pilut, Lawrence
Additional Details:
The Hurricanes are probably looking for more of a right side guy than a left side guy, and they do have Jake bean in their system.

Pilut gives them a player who is clearly NHL ready right now, and could be an option to help replace Edmundson if he walks in free agency, along with Jake Bean.
2.
BUF
  1. Gagner, Sam
  2. Khaira, Jujhar
  3. 2020 3rd round pick (EDM)
  4. 2021 6th round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Edmonton needs a fast winger and a bottom six checking line centerman for their playoff run and Buffalo also has the ability to retain salary if needed.

Sheary has over 50 games of playoff experience and has had success with the likes of Crosby in Pittsburgh although he hasn’t been given much of a look with Eichel in Buffalo.

IF Edmonton cannot land the bigger fish or if Ken Holland does not want to pay the price, Sheary could be a nice fall back at a more reasonable cost.

Edmonton could also use another bottom six penalty killing center and teams are rumored to be favorable of Larson’s grit and tenacity he brings. Edmonton will likely prefer JG Pageau but the price will be high
EDM
  1. Larsson, Johan
  2. Sheary, Conor
Additional Details:
Gagner comes in to fill a positional need at center and right wing, as well as familiarity with Ralph Kreuger being a bonus, but his main purpose here is the salary balance

Buffalo could retain salary hereditary to allow maneuvering for another trade for Edmonton
3.
BUF
  1. Anisimov, Artem
  2. Namestnikov, Vladislav ($1,600,000 retained)
  3. 2020 2nd round pick (DAL)
  4. 2020 6th round pick (STL)
Additional Details:
While playoffs may be a longshot for Buffalo, they still may want to maintain competitiveness in the locker room.

This trade also allows them to take a look at a potential free agent option in Namestnikov Who can play anywhere in the top 9 without breaking the bank completely. Ottawa also is somewhat budget conscious and they do get out from the final year of Anisimov’s contract for 2020-21, and Anisimov should fill a potential third line center role next year.
OTT
  1. Davidsson, Marcus [Reserve List]
  2. Frolík, Michael
  3. 2020 2nd round pick (BUF)
  4. 2020 3rd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Davidsson is currently having a down year in his development and the upside is still there for the second rounder

Frolik is an asset that could be flipped at the deadline by Ottawa

Buffalo and Ottawa will swap second round picks

I think that trade with EDM is pretty brutal for us. Not that sheary or larsson has that much value. But Larrson is a valuable 4th line defensive minded guy, and we get back no plaers to help us, plus we take Gagner cap hit for a 3 and 6th. This just doesn't fit with what buf is trying to do. If youre going to make a trade like that edm has to pay more for the gagner hit or take gagner out.

Ideally buf keeps Larsson and resigns him on a longer deal to solidfy that 4th line role.
