If I Had 84 Million Dollars

Created by: SammyB
Team: 2020-21 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 5, 2020
Published: Mar. 5, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is assuming the salary cap increases to $84M, the low end of the scale the league gave the other day.

Detroit trade is a salary dump; Wings get goalie of the future in exchange for taking on two bad contracts, Canucks get a solid backup goalie to hold the fort until DiPietro is NHL ready.

Toffoli is only 27 so he still has a good 3-5 years of top six production left in him, while Barrie is a younger, better, and only slightly more expensive replacement for Tanev.

Gaudette gets a bridge, Virtanen gets a well-deserved raise, and Stecher gets a one-year 'prove it' contract that doesn't take up any cap space for 2021.

Speaking of 2021, the expiring contracts of Pearson, Sutter, Edler, Stecher, Bernier, and Benn free up $22.225M to sign Pettersson and Hughes and get some cheap depth to fill out the roster.

Let me know what you think!

Wouldn't it be cheaper for the Wings to just sign one of Markstrom, Holtby, or even potentially make a move for Murray's RFA rights? Demko doesn't move the needle enough (for me at least) to take on Loui plus Baertschi.

Markstrom and Holtby would be cheaper but they'll be at the tail end of their primes by the time the Wings are ready to compete. Detroit's going to be really bad for another couple years, taking on bad contracts is 100% worth getting one of the best goalie prospects in hockey, IMO.

I don't like your UFA targets.

Our defense is bad enough as it is and you want to replace our best defensive defenseman (Tanev) with a redundant offensive player who's terrible at defense (Barrie)? How would that work out any differently than it has for the Leafs this year? The only way Barrie has any sort of value to us is if Hughes is somehow out of the picture (like Reilly is for Toronto). Paying through the nose for a secondary option is terrible management.

We have young wingers who can take Toffoli's spot in the next 1-2 years (Podkolzin, Hoglander, Lind). We don't need to tie up cap space there. Instead invest in the defense.

I've been posting rosters with a variant of that same Demko trade, but I think if it just gets rid of Eriksson's deal we don't really need to move Baertschi. Even if it means throwing in a mid-round pick to get it done I would do it, with the obvious caveat that VAN has locked up Markstrom. Otherwise I like your team, but agree with Canucks33 that signing Tanev to a smaller deal than what you've given Barrie is a better fit for the roster.
