That is one expensive defensive corps.

Also, there arent going to be buyouts.

Even if both he and Svech take 10 mil we still have 7 mil+cap increase for like 6 players

Ideal and signing Vatanen do not belong in the same sentence

Says who? If it’s a flat cap the owners will push hard for buyouts. Cap struck teams won’t be able to retain key players without buyouts . If the season is canceled (which it will be), there will be buyouts

No need to sign Vantanen. Their D core is already very good

If there is a flat cap the players will exercise their escrow and it will increase

The idea for Vatanen is because he has not played a game for the Canes. Meaning they gave up Kuokkanen for nothing. Bringing Vatanen back makes the trade look better, provides a RHD man, which Carolina are quickly running out of, and a nicely balanced D corps. Vatanen isn't an ideal player, but he has his benefits offensively and on the powerplay.

Next season the Canes have 27 mil in cap space + the cap increase for 8 players. What the heck are you smoking? Dougie is staying in Carolina, it's a badly kept secret

I get that, but Carolina acquired Vantenen as a rental. There’s no need for him next season. I get they paid a good amount to acquire him, but that’s the reality of getting a rental player this season with corona virus. It sucks but that’s life. Carolina when healthy have no need for Sami.

    Slavin-Hamilton
    Skjei-Pesce
    Gardiner- fleury/bean

    Is a loaded D core

Gives you a LH-RH imbalance, and gives you an absolute turnstile of a 3rd pairing. Jake is great offensively, but Fleury has left more to be desired and Bean would be a rookie. The idea was to use Vatanen to allow the team to have 3RD and 3LD and then give someone like Bean a path into the D corps for the future while selling high on someone like Fleury who's had a great season, and still not likely to stick around. Carolina's D core is loaded either way, I just thought this was better asset management.
