Description

In free agency the Devils bring in Chris Tanev for 4 years at $5 million. They get good bridge deals for Jesper Bratt and Mackenzie Blackwood. They then extend both Kyle Palmieri and Nikita Gusev to 5 year $6 million deals that start next year.

Devils Conditional Picks:

Canucks miss playoffs, send unprotected 2021 1st in exchange for the 2020 1st (14th overall).

Coyotes re-sign Hall, swap 2021 3rd for 2nd.

Sami Vatanen plays in all Hurricanes playoffs games, so they send a 2020 3rd.

Wayne Simmonds and the Sabres don’t make playoffs, pick does not get upgraded.

Devils draft top right handed defense prospect Jamie Drysdale at 7th as well as the Swedish sniper RW Alexander Holtz at 10th.

At camp Jesper Boqvist, Janne Kuokkanen, and Nick Merkley impress the most, winning top 9 roles. Miles Wood Travis Zajac and Joey Anderson return together to form a shut-down, zone entry focused 4th line that plays a little more than a regular 4th to make up for the inexperience of the 3rd line.

Nolan Foote, Alexander Holtz, Jamie Drysdale, and Kevin Bahl also impress at camp but are all sent to the AHL or their junior teams to try again next year.

I like the Tanev signing, I think he'd be a good fit behind Severson. But I'd be shocked if Drysdale was available at 7, especially with Anaheim picking in front of them. I could see Holtz at 10, but I also would bet against it. Granted, anything can happen and I understand the wishful thinking.

Not mad about the Tanev signing, but I think that money would be better allocated to the left side instead of another RHD if they are going for someone to play top pair minutes. Mirco Mueller is garbage as far as I’m concerned. They can let him walk or grab a 3rd rounder for compensation if someone else wants to sign him for around that price.

I wouldn’t mind seeing NJ target Brendan Dillon, Brodie, or Scandella. Of course they would have to over pay a bit, but that’s the case in bringing anyone to a bottom team.

I’d also like to see them move Wood and McLeod for assets, put Bastian on the 4th line, and grab a solid bottom 4 pairing guy like DeMelo.
