DAL-NYI trades- Culture Change

Created by: sabertooth12
Team: 2020-21 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 13, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Sabres need to be patient and let their players develop. They need a stopgap 2C to help develop Cozens who should start on the wing and Mittelstadt at 3C next season. They need a stopgap 2nd pair LD behind Dahlin who can run PP2 to give Samuelsson and Johnson time to develop. Pavelski and Leddy are only on 2 year contracts which is perfect. Pavelski can move to RW in the second year of his deal when Mitts or Cozens take 2C full time. Okposo is a CBO candidate who can resign for the minimum and bring us under the cap in this scenario. McCabe and Risto have been part of a losing culture their entire careers and badly need a change of scenery, I don't think any Sabres fan would argue that.

Other stopgap 2C's I would consider:
Krejci: Boston still in win-now mode so that would never happen
Staal: MIN have no one to replace him
Stastny: Depends on Cody Glass being able to take up 2C full time
Trochek: Should have gotten him at the trade deadline

Stopgap 2nd pair LD I would consider:
Brodie: probably wouldn't sign a 2 year deal here
Edler: VAN have no one to replace him
Goligoski: could probably get him
Giordano: still probably too important for Calgary
Ekholm: NSH has not one to replace him

The Pavelski trade makes sense, but the Stars would probably throw Buffalo a pick to avoid retention. I also don't know if you would want Pavelski. He looked lost away from SJ system.

I fail to see why DAL needs to save money

I like the Islanders deal, get a decent young player, a good pick and -- most importantly-- cap relief. Maybe would want a 2nd back over a 3rd, but I think they take this deal tbh

Would you consider Leddy a solid second pair defenseman still?

You think he could still play 2C another season? He's 1 season removed from a 38 goal year

Its hard to say. He's more offensive-minded so he's struggled in Trotz's system a bit. As long as he doesn't play with Risto, I think he's probably capable of top-4 minutes.

He's still an excellent skater and really good in transition. He's just not great defensively and hasn't hard an opportunity to showcase his offense.
