Initial Creation Date: May 6, 2020
Published: May 6, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think Pelech doesn't start with Pulock right away due to conditioning from his achilles injury. As a result, Toews will start with Pulock. The pair will be very good. As a result, by default, Trotz won't change that. Dobson will start off with Greene. When Dobson starts to progress and Mayfield shows his usual 2nd pair struggles, then Dobson will eventually take that 2nd/1b pair by the 3/4 point of the season. Bellows, by default, will be showcased as either a player to protect in the expansion draft or a trade deadline piece.
If you have any questions why I did this, then ask me. I'm very insecure with my ideas so I might just delete it later on.

P.S. there were 2 mistakes by the website. Wahlstrom has 2 years remaining after the 2020-21 season instead of 1. Toews is also not an RFA after that 6-year deal.

Jersey would be better off just buying out Schneider themselves

I agree but they're too cheap to keep dead money for 4 years. They'd rather spend money on players that'll actually play in their NHL club.

I’m not sure how big the sample size is, but toews-pulock had the highest xGA/60 and xGF/60 of any isles pairing this season.

Toews is very underrated defensively. Pelech is better, but not by much.

If they're a cheap team, they'd still save more money just sitting Schneider in the press box, or in the AHL. they clearly weren't afraid to sit Him in Binghamton

I agree with that. I just don't think Trotz will tax Pelech too much right away. Achilles injuries are nothing to mess with. Like the Hickey injury that got Toews called up, this might turn out to be another long-term blessing in disguise.

Because the buyout window closed when Schneider got waived. They'd prefer not to pay him in actual money if they view him never as a starter again. Islanders don't care about short-term financial sacrifices.

Well I do think long term, toews- pulock is the way to go. Toews and Dobson are the best play drivers on D. Pelech-pulock are excellent defensively , but at times struggle to drive play. I think Dobson will be a better play driver than pulock when paired with pelech.

I'm basing that off of how he does in training camp because he's not expansion exempt. As for who? Unsure.

With Pageau at 3C, there’s no reason why bellows shouldn’t get a long look next season. I wouldn’t trade him for a pick and we can’t afford to take on much salary. I thought he skated well and his positioning in the defensive zone was solid. Also hustled on the back check. I just don’t see a reason to trade him. For expansion draft I would protect (assuming bellows contributes):

Lee, barzal, beau, eberle , pageau , nelson , bellows.

You leave bailey exposed. Most likely they’ll take mayfield or Aho (if he doesn’t get traded) . If bailey is selected, it’s sheds 5 mill and wahlstrom should be on the 2nd line by the end of next season anyways.

What's going to determine Bellows' future is this: puck security. Dude was a turnover machine even with limited responsibility. You don't see that with Wahlstrom. Wahlstrom, unless he flops in training camp or gets hurt, is going have a calder finalist type of year. Book it!

I’m not giving up on bellows because he had a few games with bad turnovers. Boychuk and mayfield are among the worst in turnover differential in the league. Bailey is also a turnover machine and I think he’s a solid player.

I’m not high on bellows, but I know he can be a solid middle 6 contributor and he won’t cost more than 2 mill for the next 3 years.

Agree on wahlstrom

I'm not arguing that it's not good for New York. It's a great deal for New York. It's terrible for New Jersey.

Why? The Devils dump Schneider's salary and get a dman prospect, 2 mid-pair cost-controlled dmen that will hold the fort until prospects are ready. If you're a Devils fan, your top 4 could be Leddy, Severson, Butcher, and Subban with Boychuk or Carrick on the bottom or as a temporary fill-in for Subban if he gets hurt and they STILL have space to add a little more during the process.

If Boychuk hit free agency today, he'd be lucky if he got a league min deal. And Leddy is a middle of the road player who gets crushed in terms of possession, and is way overpaid for what he brings.

He gets crushed in possession because he is not a good fit in trotz system and he plays with boychuk. Before trotz arrived he was always a solid possession player. The isles would need to add a 2nd or 3rd rd pick as incentive for NJ to make this trade

He hasn't been a positive possession player since 15-16. It's definitely gotten worse under Trotz

He was a positive possession player in 16-17 and 17-18. Last season was the first in his career he wasn’t a positive possession player.

His CF% has been below 50% for the last 4 seasons, and he's been a negative CF% rel for the last 3 years.

Where did you see this? Hockey reference has his CF% at 51.7 (16-17) , 51.3 (17-18)
