Kapanen-Zadorov

Created by: UpsideDownQue
Team: 2020-21 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: May 15, 2020
Published: May 15, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Avs trade from a position of strength (LD) to add another Compher-esque versatile middle 6 forward who can play PP and PK. Zadorov regularly plays the right side so he could slot onto the Leafs 2nd pair

Expansion Draft:
MacKinnon, Landeskog, Rantanen, Kadri, Burakovsky, Kapanen, Compher, Girard, Makar, Graves/EJ (depends if he waives NMC)

I think the value is pretty close but lmk if either team should to add (maybe COL adds a late pick?)

No. That's a very, VERY hard no from Toronto.

I was thinking something like Kapanen + a second or third for Jost + Zadarov.

Yes but he isn't really any better then Holl or Dermott, and his contract is bad. If Severson, Manson, and Murphy's name come up when Kapanen's name is thrown around and they are clear top-4 RHD then this wouldn't even be considered. If this trade did happen, which is highly unlikely then it would look like this: (I do not support this trade, just what the value would look like)

Kapanen for Zadorov 25% retained, 3rd round pick/Tyson Jost

How can Zadorovs contract be retained when he is an RFA

He's an RFA? That makes it even worse for Toronto.

Zadorov is an RFA how would we retain on him? unless you mean a sign and trade which would entirely depend on the term and AAV. Assuming he gets his QO of 3.2M I would be willing to retain if its a 1 year deal but no way we are retaining if its a multi year deal.

I may do Kapanen for Zadorov (signed to 1 yr 3.2M & Avs retain 25%) + 2021 3rd rounder

The value isn't far off, but it still makes no sense for Toronto. Zadorov isn't meaningful enough and won't push the needle the same way Severson/Manson/Murphy would.

I would do that - maybe the pick upgrades conditionally based on Josts offense? or instead if TOR makes the 2nd round?

Thats a fair point - if you get better value in a trade for one of them then you should take it

I wouldn't do it from a Leafs perspective. I'm personally just not a fan of Zadorov and I just think there are better options out there if they are willing to involve Kapanen in a deal.

If kapenan gets moved leafs will be after a true RHD like severson. there really is no point in acquiring Zadorov as he is just another lefty who can play on the right. Toronto could keep kapenan and bring up liligren, or move dermott/sandin to the right side.

I would do that trade from Avs perspective, but from Toronto's side I don't think Zadorov is the right fit, for 2 reasons:

1) They've got Reilly, Muzzin, Dermott, Sandin, Lehtonen as LHD's, so Zadorov is more of the same.
2) Toronto probably can't take on Zadorov's $3.5m+ salary.

That said, without intending to start WW3 with Toronto fans a physical beast like Zadorov would do wonders for the physicality of that (otherwise soft) team.
