Indeed. In this way it makes sense for both teams. CGY get good assets, BUF gets the best and also worst with benefits.

But if I'm St Louis in that same scenario I'm saying hell no.
Would you do either of those trades for Seguin and Pavelski?

No, but that's for the obvious reason called "Pavelski is not a cap dump."

Also DAL don't need any of the forementioned assets. CGY does. And so arguably did STL back when they acquired ROR.

In this case the trade in my opinion makes sense for all of the participants. I get taking Lucic hurts, but without adding him this deal falls short on BUF's end.

Perhaps, but turning 36 this summer and coming off his worst season by far in his career and some might disagree. If Calgary needs the assets, then no need to include Lucic. Although Monahan is the best, Buffalo is not in position to give up 4 assets for someone that they hope is their 3C in two years and take on a cap dump.

I disagree. Imo BUF is just in that position. They have so many assets to use, they should try to acquire something substantial with it. They have, what, 5 NHL level RHDs in the organisation...Risto is passable. With Dahlin, McCabe, Pilut and Samuelsson, Johnson becomes expendable. With Eichel, Monahan(allegedly), Cozens and Rossi(provided he's the one they draft as predicted in this post) they wouldn't need Mittelstadt either. And the 2021 pick shouldn't be the dealbreaker here.

Monahan would be their 2C for years to come. Cozens and Rossi takes up their wings if necessary.

Point is that I can't see CGY moving Monahan without getting rid of Lucic. And also the funny thing is that Lucic might be actually beneficial for them as he brings the grit this team lacks.

This is all fine if all the RFAs are fine taking cheap bridge deals the next two years and they are ok losing Reinhart after the 3 year contract you gave him. Of course this only matters as long as no one hits their bonuses, because that would leave them with even less money available.
Maybe Buffalo can just send Reinhart and Okposo to Dallas for 3 prospects and a 1st.

Sure, I wouldn't mind. Sadly they couldn't afford that.

My 3 year prediction for the Reinhart contract follows the logic that of Darnell Nurse. He also wanted a contract that leads him straight to free agency and he took a small discount for it.

It’s bonkers
5 assets for Monahan, all high end (taking Lucic counts)
There’s absolutely no chance

Reinhart already took two bridge deals. He'll be a UFA no matter how long his next deal is.

4. And calling Risto a high end asset is somewhat sweet, considering how much hate gets. Mittelstadt is iffy and Johnson is heading to a logjam...

Lucic could be a beneficial asset...bringing grit and experience. At least CGY seems to like the guy.

If Mitts &/or Risto don’t have value, then:
1- the Sabres won’t trade them
2- Calgary wouldn’t want them

There’s zero chance this deal would happen

Oh they have value, don't get me wrong. Just not enough to get a TOP25 C in the world. This is where Lucic comes in.

Out of curiosity, what single piece of that package is the biggest dealbreaker for you?

It’s not 1 single piece, it’s that u want so many
Taking Lucic’s contract is worth a low 1st
Johnson was a low 1st
Making the playoffs next year is no guarantee, so who knows where the 2021 1st will be?

And the Sabres aren’t gonna “sell low” on Risto,
Botts has said so numerous times
He’d have been traded by now if we were willing to

And we aren’t gonna “sell low” on Mitts either
He was Botterill’s first ever draft pick
And while he hasn’t developed as quickly as we’d have liked,
he’s still a top10 pick with lots of potential

It’s just giving up WAY too much for Monahan & a bad contract
And saying Lucic has value bc he can provide grit doesn’t hold up... we can just sign a gritty 4th liner as a UFA for much less
