That Staal deal is a lively possibility. Blake has stated he's looking for a veteran defenseman with short term, and Staal could be a good fit at that price.

Probably wouldn't even have to retain in the Ottawa deal

We are simply taking a chance on him. Back in 2017, he was one of my top targets. Now he's free! bank on him.

I don’t see how non-NHL players like Staal and Smith get picks in return while Steen would require a first to move. He’d be either the 5th or 6th best forward on this team and miles better than anyone in the bottom-6.

valid point. Just saw an opportunity to eat some cap for a pick.

What do you think about:
Staal or Smith no retained salary
Strome
for
One of Ottawas later second round picks

If we trade Strome, it'd have to be for a higher second or later first

You only got a second and two 7ths (useless) in your original trade. In this deal Ottawa still takes a cap dump but gets Strome at a reduced price

By the way, one reason why the Smith and Staal deals are so appealing is the fact that they're both owed less actual money the last year of their contracts than their cap hits.

Besides, if there's a Blues player New York should target, it should be Bozak. Probably wouldn't cost much if anything to acquire and you'd have a very good third line center who can play up in a pinch that's probably just going to be a cap casualty to keep Pietrangelo

Kings wouldn't need for you to retain salary on that trade. They have plenty of space. They'd probably prefer that you just downgrade the pick some more and they'd take the full cap hit.

The only problem is Staal's full NMC. Does he waive for LA? Not a lot of places in the NHL that are more attractive to live than Los Angeles, but New York might be one of them.

how about a 6th for a full hit? Staal would definitely waive. he'll get more minutes instead being our 6-7 dman

Sounds about right. Could also be similar to something the Kings did when they traded Hagelin to Washington and upgraded their 4th round pick to a 3rd. Could be a 5th headed to New York with a 6th or 7th headed back to LA.

That logic regarding waiving his NMC is sound assuming he only takes hockey into consideration. He and his family have built a life in New York. Not sure he wants to uproot that to go play in LA if he doesn't have to. Next summer, if the Rangers don't want him, he could sign a less expensive deal with another team still in the area and he wouldn't have to uproot his family.

But it's inevitable. we are 100% not re-signing him and if he continues to play it won't be here anyways.

But it could be in Newark, Long Island, Philly, Boston, etc. Somewhere much closer to home that wouldn't require his family to move.

It's all speculation at this point, I'm just saying that it's not a given that he would "definitely" waive.
