I saw this debate on the NHL Tape Talk page today on Instagram, so I thought it would be a good discussion here. Though not the same type of players, I feel they are in a similar circumstance since both have pretty good underlying numbers, they put up great production and often have their achievements undermined because they play alongside elite centers.
Mitch Marner has 83 goals and 291 points in 300 career regular-season games. In the playoffs, he has 5 goals and 17 points in 20 games.
Jake Guentzel has 98 goals and 200 points in 243 career regular-season games. In the playoffs, he has 24 goals and 43 points in 41 games.
Personally, I think it's very close but I'd give Guentzel the edge. He's more of a goal scorer which makes him more important, plus his ability to elevate his play in the playoffs is better than the vast majority of players in the league.
Definitely a big fan of playmakers. Marner definitely has the point production and ability to make others better that I appreciate. Guentzel is very good though too. Great goal scorer and a hard worker. Great playoff performer too. I love his contract to death as well, cuz guys of his caliber don’t usually get those good contracts these days.
Overall I gotta go with marner though. I love players like him. My favorite player ever was peter forsberg, so I love playmakers and consistent point getters, which marner is.

Guentzel is more elite. For me it's simply not a debate. Guentzel was 3rd in Even-Strength Goals last year. He was having a monster year before he got hurt. he is an elite 40 goal scorer, a perfect winger for our franchise centres, and had underrated playmaking skills. he doesn't jump off the page in the random skill categories Marner does, but he's just as effective. Contract is a huge thing--people like to ignore the fact that having Marner/random $1.1M player==2 Guentzels @$12M total. Guentzel's breakout 40 goal year came and he wasn't even on the #1 PP! Guentzel is simply the better choice and I take him every time...the leafs bias is huge with a lot of people...

Marner is better, but not almost 5 million per year better. but it all really depends on what your first line needs. Guentzel is who the pens need more because Crosby is the playmaker on the line.
Guentzel is the better scorer and contract. Marner is the better all around player.
A line of Guentzel-Crosby-Marner would be deadly.
