I just feel like Buffalo doesnt really have an incentive to do this. If Johnsson doesnt return great from his injury thats just another bulge on a roster spot taking the place of where talent for Eichel could be

    Seems fair with the retention.

I’m not so worried about his form when he returns. Hyman just came back to have a career year. What I would be concerned about is whether or not the sabres need another LHW. Reinhart is there only real RHW. I know skinner can probably play his off wing.

Johnsson is just another Vesey on Buffalo's roster. 20 to 30 point player. Really no motive to trade away a 3rd and Thompson for that.

Also the Sabres already have 4 top 9 LW 9n their roster. No need to add another one that is injured at a 3.4 cap hit.

    20-30 point playertears of joy

Thanks but if you don't look at a player stats then you can't justify a player

fair enough point. I guess this is a bad trade for both teams as leafs might be able to get a little more for Johnsson

Exactly it would be like the Leafs trading Liljegren for another left shot D. Just doesn't make sense organizationally

Let's look at some of Johnsson's stats then. First year when he broke 20 goals he had a ridiculously high shooting percentage, suggesting he will not repeat that. This past year in over half a season he managed 3 (THREE) even strength goals while playing with top end talent in the NHL. He is 5 ft 10 in and doesn't offer any physical presence, greatest asset is his speed, and is currently coming off a serious leg injury. All that for a cap hit of 3.4 million during a period where the caps is not expected to increase. So looking at his stats justifies around a 4th round draft pick for him. And with Toronto needing to shed salary just to become cap compliant, this drops his value even more. There are more teams looking to shed cap then can take on cap. All this means that Johnsson's current value if very little.

Let me break it down a little slower for you. He does not carry the play. He gets more than 30 points on Toronto's team, but on buffalo's roster, he is 20 to 30 point player. Aka another Jimmy Vesey.
