Those are my thoughts too man! They simply have to go with the best offer they get but yes I could definitely see Detroit going after a bigger contract as well for more assets.

Yeah I agree with this as well. It makes sense for Detroit (and NJ/Ottawa/etc) to wait things out and see what offers they get for capdumps, because it's possible that they can get some seriously good deals involving high picks/prospects to take on bad contracts.

I'm pretty happy that the Wings have so much cap space. The flat cap could end up being something that really helps our rebuild.

I think I've seen 20+ acceptable cap dumps on Cap Friendly over the last couple months, probably more. The Red Wings will likely have around 10 mil, maybe 15 mil at most to take on cap dumps. That's room for about 2-3 cap dumps. I think there will end up being a bidding war with Yzerman accepting the top few offers. Teams that are really desperate are going to have to outbid other teams and only the teams willing to pay the most will get cap relief.

Very true. Detroit are going to be in a very strong position this offseason when it comes to capspace. I think Yzerman will not only try to weaponise his capspace for capdumps, but also to acquire players for under market value. For example I can see him raiding Tampa for Gourde and Paquette at cheap prices.

Why? For a player like Eriksson absolutely...I don't get Wings fans saying things like this though. Baertschi's contract isn't crazy and if you can gain a 3rd and a 4th, perhaps something even a little more I would take that all day. And for the record, I am a huge Wings fan. I feel like that's beyond fair for an expiring contract at just over 3m.

I don't think you get that because it sets a very low bar for future trades. We don't want to set that precident. Maybe if it gets to a couple weeks before the season starts, and theres no better way to use the cap space. Aside from that, we can do better imo.

I agree. I think 3rd + 4th is actually a pretty modest price to get rid of $2.3m in dead capspace. It could easily go quite a bit higher than that as teams will be paying a premium for capspace to try to squeeze in not only their own RFA's, but also to try to take advantage of a cheap UFA market.

Difference is that doesn’t get accounted for enough on here is what is dead space to one team isn’t for another. In this case it’s a player van has no use for but Detroit doesn’t have the depth van has he would be a player for them. Just because one team is cap dumping doesn’t mean the other team is just taking dead space. That’s why costs for dumps are unrealistic on this site. Won’t see teams paying to remove players will be finding better fits for them and accepting bellow market value for them

Vancouver don't need to shed Eriksson until 2021. For 2020/21 they should be fine if they just find a taker for Baertschi. If they want to push for a better RHD via trade/UFA they could also trade Sutter even with some retention if necessary as that could open up another $2-3m.

That’s why I said the following year for Eriksson. They might not need to even move Baertschi if the RFAs take less or find someone to take Sutter. Does Virtanen come in closer to 3.5 vs 2.5? Probably in the middle.

I've spent most of the past two days on CapFriendly looking at Vancouver, and here's my analysis:

The key factor is how many of their significant free agents this year (Toffoli, Markstrom, Tanev and Stecher) they want to keep. If it's all four, the Canucks have to get rid of Eriksson (with up to $2 million retained) or one of Beagle/Roussel/Sutter. If not, their situation is manageable as is. The big issue arises NEXT summer when they have to sign Pettersson and Hughes to new contracts and make a decision about keeping Pearson. You are correct in saying that's when they absolutely HAVE to dump Eriksson. I have a 2021-2022 construction keeping all four of this year's graduating class and the major three for next year, and it takes moving. Eriksson and one of Beagle/Roussel.

Baertschi to me is not a problem for either Vancouver or the team he's moving to. Your proposal is very good for Detroit or any other team with cap space and it doesn't really hurt the Canucks, but you should realize that a buyout costs Vancouver only $1,766,666 against the cap this year and $800,000 next season. Looking down the road, I'd try to move one of the fourth-liners now. I've tried numerous posts featuring Sutter with $875,000 (20%) retained to a team that could use a fourth-liner (New Jersey, Nashville, etc.) but I haven't impressed the majority of those teams' fans with my brilliance.

Appreciate the thought you've put into this.

Vancouver absolutely needs to avoid having Baertschi or Eriksson's cap hits impacting 2021/22. Having $2m retention from Eriksson and/or $800k from Baertschi's buyout lingering would make it that much harder to resign Hughes, Petterson, etc. As such I don't think buying out Baertschi or retaining on Eriksson are feasible options.

Baertschi might be useful for other teams, but his trade value will be reflective of his value to Vancouver, whereby his capdump value is $2.3m because that's the cost for Vancouver to bury him without having it impacting 2021/22.

Cap space IS gold, but Detroit are going to have oceans of unused capspace this offseason so it makes perfect sense to weaponise it to pick up some extra assets.

Yes assets like 1st rd picks in 2022.. Or studs 18-23 yrs old that fit our rebuild core..not 3rd rounders for fill in "guy"..who isn't better than one of our kids who needs man opportunity

Baertschi could be a useful player in the AHL to help younger forwards find some offense. He's PPG this season in the AHL; stick him next to Rasmussen on the 1st line there and he can probably help the kid develop offense. Or you have a bottom 6 forward for the 4th line minutes in the NHL that allow your best prospects to get bigger minutes in the AHL. Someone's gotta take those 4th line minutes, might as well be an older guy instead of a prospect who would be wasted in such a limited role.
