What’s the point in getting Backes in the Kase trade instead of a pick just to trade him again?

Why would Minnesota do this trade? Zuc is still a quality winger. They have enough old 4th liners.

Also why would a cap strapped team retain 2M for another 4 years?

Zucc wasn't good for MN, and his contract is awful. MN has too many wings already. It opens up another protection slot (Zucc has a NMC) for MN in the expansion draft.

MN has one of the better cap situations in the league right now. In this trade 1 year of Backes would be 500k more and 3 years of $4m in savings over just keeping Zucc.

All that being said I see no reason for Zucc to waive his NMC for ANA.

No team is ever going to retain 2M for 4 years. I dont care how you look at it.
