Lafreniere Dynasty

Created by: ninetymph
Team: 2020-21 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 10, 2020
Published: Aug. 12, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is a scenario that is designed to have the team compete in the 2020-2021 season while continuing to restock the farm system, which is depleted of much of its forward depth (save for Kravtsov).

In 2021, the aim would be to resign key RFA's and land a big free agent (or two) by using the projected $30m in cap space to create three full scoring lines and land a top LD if one is available (or utilize extra picks to trade for one if not).

Projected 2021 FA's include:
(Forwards) Landeskog, Saad, Paquette, Hyman, Schwartz
(Defense) Murray, Hamilton, Oleksiak

One or two of these guys could turn the team into legitimate contenders, if not odds-favorites, to win the Stanley Cup for a few seasons.

Trades
NYR
  1. 2020 3rd round pick (CBJ)
  2. 2021 1st round pick (LAK)
Additional Details:
The Rangers aren't in a cap-crisis, but could certainly use some overhead clearance in this regard. With ADA playing third line minutes, and two other right-handed defensemen capable of playing powerplay QB in 2020 (and potentially Nils Lundqvist in 2021), this clears away a future cap headache and utilizes one of the main sources of depth for the Rangers.
LAK
  1. Deangelo, Anthony
Additional Details:
One of the Kings offseason goals should be to rebuild their blue line. This kickstarts that effort by acquiring a young RHD to anchor the 2nd pairing and chip in plenty of offensive firepower.

Yeah a rebuilding team is definitely willing to trade next years first round pick for an overrated offensive defenceman. They’re already paying one of those 11 mill. There’s literally 0 chance LA accepts that

I like the idea, and the value of TDA is a 1st, but LA is a rebuilding team, and still will be next season. TDA could fit with the Kings as a young established player who will still be good when they're ready to contend, but shouldn't trade their own 1st next year, because it'll be a lottery pick.

It's a 2021 1st, not asking for the #2OA.

Everything I read about LA rebuild says how they need to restock their blueline and it's not like there's a ton of quality young guys. ADA was a hell of a points producer this season, and the first would be 2021 so giving them a chance to get better, but honestly they can find a first for him elsewhere. The idea is to get $30m of cap space free in the 2021 offseason when (forwards) Landeskog, Saad, Paquette, Hyman, Schwartz, (defense) Murray, Hamilton, and Oleksiak are all projected to hit free agency.

While I agree with your conclusion, in no universe is Doughty an offensive defenseman.

Interesting. What do you think DeMelo goes for? I think he's underrated as hell, which doesn't always translate into contract dollars.

At least 3, plenty of teams are going to be trying to sign him. I bet he gets closer to 4

WPG only traded a 3rd to land him in Feb... that isn't screaming $4m AAV to me but I could be wrong.

There's cap space for $3m+, but $4m would be pushing it for this lineup. If there's as much competition as you think, I'd look elsewhere, but I was thinking of him as a strong value bridge to Nils Lundqvist in '21 or '22.

Whoever gets him will be lucky, he'd be great on NY but I think the Jets find a way to keep him. Could easily see him going to Toronto as well

4 years for Strome.... Guy had a good season sure but he got carried by panarin so hard. and before you scream Chemistry i think panarin hitting a career high had more to do with the fact that the power play was much better than columbus's the last couple years. Anyway i think the rangers need to move on from strome, overrated and overpaid if they extend him.

Landeskog won’t be a FA he’ll sign an extension with COL

You're entitled to your opinion, but I think it's wrong. Strome's xGF-xGA is slightly higher than Panarin's, so it wasn't all Bread.

The Rangers also don't have a 2nd line center (Chytil is not ready) - so what's your solution there?

Probably, but the point is that there are a solid 5 forwards and 3 defensemen on that list. With probably somewhere north of $20m to throw around, they'll have room for at least 2 of them.

Except that unless they are foolish they won’t spend all that money. Because shortly after that guys like Zibanijad, Kakko, Lafrienere will all be eligible for extensions. If they did do that it would be such an instant gratification move it would be detrimental to their long term success. You’re also assuming 2 of those guys would want to sign in NY, which to be honest isn’t for everyone.

There's $30m in cap space. $10m of it is to resign players, Kakko hasn't shown that he deserves a huge raise yet, and Lafrienere hasn't even played a game yet. Plus - while the cap is flat for now, it should be going up in the future.

But even so, just landing Hyman as a 3C & Oleksiak as a top 4 defenseman would be a huge boon for the team, and that shouldn't come close to the $20m surplus in case the kids continue to grow into their projections.

That’s wishful thinking. Watch how cap space evaporated when guys come off ELC’s.
