I'd wager if you were out of the playoff picture and wanted to move him at the deadline, you'd get a return of a 1st rounder and a prospect at least.

For 1 year of a 38 year old? Thats probably a little high, especially since Calgary owners will never retain on a contract

If I was a contender and I could get him for a playoff run, I would pay a pretty high price. He's still an incredible player.

yes but like I said, most contenders cant take on a ~7M contract and Flames will never retain

If they are out of the playoffs they would take on a salary to offset and get the futures.

I don't see Giordano being traded unless it's at the deadline of his last season and the flames have imploded and are out of the playoff picture.

The only other way would be if they blew it up between now and then and he said he wanted to go to a contender to finish his career. If that were the case I would hope to hell that ownership would agree to eat 50%, because that's the only way they might get something of value for him, he's almost 37 years old.

I think you can get that. Age isn't as much of a concern when the player's not locked up. If he performs at a high level next year as well I think you can get a very solid return for him at the deadline.

You don't think he could get a 1st and prospect heading into the final year? It doesn't matter how old he is in the final year of his deal anyway

At the deadline they can because of the salary cap multiplication rule thing that nobody except for Gary Bettman understands

    1. Flames owners will never retain on a contract.

    2. There is no cap manipulation, NHL players get a bi-weekly pay. So if by the deadline they are traded and only owed 1/3 of their yearly contract by then that is how much their cap hit is. basically every team gets 81.5M to spend per year and if you acquire a player towards the end of the season they have already been paid a majority of their contract so you don't owe them as much.

Nevermind cap retention, at the deadline, Gio is owed less money because most of the season is paid already.

I do agree with you that Flames ownership will never retain on contracts because there's more than one owner and getting people to agree on retention is not easy at all.
