Bennett and Pateryn

Created by: TheGuyInTheChair
Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 16, 2020
Published: Aug. 19, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I did this in like 5 mins so tell me if I need to add anything. I think Bennett drastically improves our top 6 and makes us tougher to play against. He retrieves pucks for Sid and Zucker, is physical, and he's fast unlike Hornqvist. And it allows our best line from last year to get back together

If we don’t keep Talbot our offer for Murray is probably Kylington+2nd at best. We really like Bennett, especially after these playoffs. Also isn’t Pittsburgh supposed to be cutting costs? 2mil below the cap is still pretty much a cap team. I believe their target was low to mid 70mil range.

Well if we do that we aren't making the playoffs so I prefer the version of events where we spend money in hopes of having a deep playoff run

Okay, but ownership has already mandated this and they have the money and the ability to fire the GM. So now you don’t have a job because you decided incorrectly that you were the more important part of the organization. The only way they become a cap team is if they trade for guys at the deadline if their 75mil team or whatever is competitive at that point so set the internal cap to 75mil and see what you can put together

Pens can probably do better than that for Murray, and I just don't see the Flames as interested in moving Bennett after his playoff performance

Haven't seen that confirmed anywhere, am confident they'll be spending to the cap like they do every year

Pens will gladly keep a starting goalie over a bust fourth liner who had one good playoffs. extremely hard pass for pit

I mean we have a full year to trade one of them before that. We aren't forced to trade either of them this offseason

and I agree with this, if you can get under the cap you should keep both to get a better idea in who you want long term. Flames are quite happy with their current goalie tandem.

Never heard of either of the Athletic guys mentioned in this article or the dude on twitter so can’t make claims about who is reliable, but this is what I saw. If that was leaked though I’m sure the GM would want to deny it so he doesn’t look desperate to shed cap. I guess we’ll see what’s up following GMJR’s first major off-season move.

Shorthand version of that is GMJR can spend to the cap if they're a cup caliber team. They'll be competitive so they'll spend to the cap

I agree I just don’t know if they’ll start the year that way. Having a bunch of space will let them be aggressive at the deadline though, so that would make for an interesting time leading up to whenever the trade deadline is next year lol

Edit: that way meaning near the cap. I think they could start low, but will be a cap team by the end regardless.

I actually agree with that because it means they don't have to move out salary in a deadline deal and they aren't moving anyone out of the room midway through the season

This team needs another Scuderi for Daley trade.
