Team: 2020-21 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 21, 2020
Published: Aug. 21, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Jackets have some very strong depth, but this season (and postseason) showed that some of the younger guys deserve a spot in the lineup, and that the team needs one or two more big fish to really make a run.

Guys like Foudy, Robinson, Stenlund, Peeke and Kukan should be full-time players. PLD, Jones, Werenski, Bjorkstrand and Texier aren't going anywhere. Atkinson, Gavrikov and Nyquist are all great contributing pieces, too.

Portzline wrote that Jarmo is laying the groundwork for a massive offseason. A Barzal offer sheet would be ideal, but unlikely. Dadonov would probably make the most sense as a UFA target but we'd need to clear out some salary first.

Biggest priorities:
- A top-six center
- A scoring LW
- Future picks (mid-rounds are fine, Jarmo's had success there)

Who is available
- Savard
- One of Korpi/Elvis (would rather keep Elvis)
- Jenner
- Anderson
- One of Murray or Nutivaara
- Wennberg
- Nash

As a big sweetener, would also be willing to part with one of Bemstrom, Tarasov, Marchenko or Voronkov (ideally Bemstrom).

I'd like to see what other teams would be willing to give up for the available guys.

I want nothing at all to do with him but the Rangers are gonna be all over a guy like Josh Anderson. Ugh.

In an AC-GM earlier this week I had proposed the following trade:

To CBJ: Roslovic, Perreault, 2021 2nd round pick

To WPG: Anderson, Wennberg, 2021 6th round pick

I got some debate from both sides but majority was saying that Winnipeg might not make the deal. I am a Winnipeg fan so I was trying to be unbiased and get as close to a fair deal as possible. I would love to add Anderson and wouldn't mind trying out Wennberg at 2C...although I am not sure due to his cap hit if he is considered close to a cap dump? That is why I added Perreault to help balance the cap.

Curious to get your thoughts on the trade or how you would modify it!

I agree CBJ is in a good spot to take a big step forward.
Don’t think torts will let Jarmo shop Jenner/Savard as those are two of his favourite heart players.
Wennberg could use a fresh start, don’t know if anyone takes a chance on him.
Elvis/Korpi both showed they are solid. Probably a market for them but would need good value as they are on good contracts (especially Korpi) should probably move one before Seattle takes him.

When he's healthy, he's a #1, but he's injured pretty frequently.

Gavrikov has taken the #2 LHD spot behind Werenski and run with it.

It's more of a thing where Peeke and Kukan both deserve a spot on the blueline, and Harrington is a servicable 6/7. As you can see, that leaves nine defensemen, which means that two of them have to go. Ideally, that's two of Savard/Murray/Nuti as they'll likely be the ones that return the most value and provide some salary relief.

Columbus fans would be all over Roslovic since he's local, but I'm not sold on him stepping into the 2C role. Still not against adding him! But I don't think it's worth adding Perrault's cap hit since Wennberg still has a little bit of upside.

What about something like:
- One of Murray/Nuti/Savard
- Two of Anderson/Jenner/Bemstrom

for

Laine + Roslovic + a mid-round pick

Anderson brings a huge return back.
Don't care what people on capfriendly say.

There are no less than a dozen teams who would want Anderson. That's driving the price up.

It's been reported that the Jackets could look to move on from Savard. He's a great second-pairing RHD who could play (and excel) on a top pair with the right partner. But they could maximize his value this summer – Torts loves him, but he's replacable.

Wennberg looked great when play resumed, but I've been burned by him before. I think a team would take a chance on him but wouldn't give up much (or would do another reclamation project in return).

Both Elvis and Korpi are exempt from the Seattle expansion draft. Again, selling high on one of them – I think Elvis is the guy of the future but would be okay with keeping Korpi instead if I was blown away by an offer.

Didn’t realize both tendies were exempt, thanks for the clarification.

I think there could be a trade to be made there. If CBJ likes Roslovic, they aren’t getting Laine so would have to be someone else with Savard/Wennberg headed the other direction maybe.

The guys I'd be most interested in from MTL would be Danault and Domi.

I'm less keen on moving Murray for conditional picks unless a first is involved. Of the three defensemen that I'd look to move, he's the one I'd prefer to keep the most just because he is *that* good when he's healthy.

What really puts Columbus in a weird spot is that they should be looking to move two defensemen and three or four forwards in order to bring in one or two star-level forwards. Makes it tough to find a deal that makes sense.

Danault would be the tougher one to pry away but as you saw there are plenty of ways that CBJ could add, especially if there's a pick or two coming from MTL to balance it out.

Admittedly I haven't watched them a ton this year – just checked the stats and saw that Laine had a FAR better year than I'd realized. Haha.

I could see Yanni Gourde as a fit helping CBJ. No idea how those two teams could make a trade tho.

Gourde or Johnson would be good fits, but I'm not sure either would waive for Columbus.

I'd certainly be open to that. Nuti looked fantastic before Kucherov scrambled his brain, he could have a huge bounce back or settle in as a 4/5 type. I think Columbus would look to add a big fish at center first before pivoting and going for a guy like Roslovic. But I think that could work.
