They should just rebuild

Created by: RoyBoy
Team: 2020-21 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 24, 2020
Published: Aug. 24, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Here’s my idea:

Trade Brodin for assets, as his contract is expiring. Simple.

Trade and retain on Parise. You’re gonna have to pay for his cap recapture later on in his career. Just get stuff for him while you can.

Get something for Stalock. He’ll hold more value than Dubnyk due to Alex’s lower cap hit.

Roll with this team you see here throughout the season. Then, we get to the trade deadline:

Trade pending UFA Erik Staal. No need to retain salary. His contract is already a bargain. Anywhere for a 1st, or maybe a 2nd and a decent prospect.

See if you can buy high at any point during the season on Matt Dumba. Get prospects over picks, as this team already has a lot.

See if you can trade Dubnyk at next years deadline. Retain as much as needed. The value may not be much. But if you retain, you can maybe argue a 4th or 3rd. It also depends on how Devan’s year goes. If you don’t get a goalie coming back, call up Kevin Boyle for the remainder of the year, as he did show promise for the Ducks in 2018-19 during a call-up.

Obviously, if this team does well and wants to make a push, they can easily go for it. But I don’t predict that this team will. Therefore, rebuild.

PS for 2021-22, see if you can send Zucc and his contract off to Seattle. Put in one of the firsts and get back a 2nd or something. If that doesn’t happen, see if you can trade him anywhere, for anything. Then just continue the rebuild from there.

You serious? Because you're trading Andrew Ladd, a pure AHL cap dump, at full cap hit (5.5M), for a guy who can still score 20-25 goals and 50 points at 3.75M. If anything the 1st isn't enough.

Isles don't do it. Matter of time before Parise is Ladd's level where as Ladd will be LTIR'd.

Ladd has to be injured to be LTIR'd. Parise is an effective player for at least 3/5 years he has left, especially for 3.75M. And when/if Parise does get to where Ladd is now, it's a 3.75M cap hit instead of 5.5M. Islanders do this in a heartbeat and never regret it.

Nope. They need cap space more than anything rn. Parise isn't of interest.

This deal saves the Islanders cap space while giving them +20-25 goals for the next few seasons. There is no chance they say no to this.

We'll need that cap space once Ladd comes off the books. If we can get a bridge deal with Barzal say 3 years. Ladds contract will be done and over with. Parise would still be taking up cap space 2 years after Ladd is gone. It's not worth it.

Seeing as Dubas hands out 1st round picks like they're Christmas gifts, Leafs probably accept.

THIS^
Only real player trade interest for the isles should be a top winger like Gaudreau or a jets winger.. and while that’s unlikely to happen it’s the only thing that truly improves this team would rather run a Johnston-Pageau-Wahlstrom line for a year and save a ton of cap for the future

Isles #1 priority is to retain this team. After that's done, Go for a top 6 W and they are gonna be dangerous.

If they can offload some contracts this offseason and have 2 of their d prospects pan out to be decent players the team has some serious longevity haven’t been this excited about em in my life really don’t know what to do with myself hahaha

It's funny you should mention needing a winger. I've slammed Eberle in the past for being lazy, but he honestly impressed me tonight. He was going in to corners and fighting for the puck, attempting to block shots with his body not just his stick and he was shooting the puck as soon he had it on his stick. (Normally he pauses and looks for the perfect shot before releasing). I just wish he could play like this every night. He didn't score but I think it's the best all around game I've seen him play in a long time.

Yeah man I understand that take (I personally am I huge eberle fan have been since he was on EDM) regardless of him I think it’s more of an issue of getting that last winger for barzal that allows him to elevate his game which in turn pushes other guys down the lineup which solves the potential depth issue.. either way regardless of what happens it really looks like this whole team has bought in and I’m super excited for the rest of the playoffs and next few years w this core

Believe me I’m very conservative in being pleased etc here it’s just after the last ~10 years of New York sports continuously disappointing me I’m happy to have a team to enjoy

Eberle doesnt always look like he’s hustling, but he might have the highest IQ on the team, which is why he was the islanders 2nd best offensive play driver this season. He’s extremely effective and he’s a great complement to barzal.

As an isles fan I might consider. Really depends where Ladd is at come season start. Can he be LTIR? The way the ploffs have been going he's not even a consideration to play so I wouldn't be surprised.

Another consideration is if bellows/wahlstrom are ready.

In short, if the pieces fall correctly, I wouldn't mind this.

He's alright with Barzal, I thought Bailey played better with him earlier in the season when Eberle was injured, but to each their own I guess.

Bailey is a very talented passer, that is the best part of his game, besides that he’s average. I’m not giving my opinion on eberle, statistically he’s the 2nd best offensive forward on the isles and barzal plays better when eberle is on his line.
