Boring Summer Devils use all of their Firsts

Description
Granlund takes a 1 year deal to see if he can raise his value long term. Devils either sign long term or move at the deadline and eat salary.

Add johnsson who is coming off a surgery for a mid round pick. After what dubas got today for Kapenen, this most likely isn’t enough for Johnsson

TVR signs a one year deal to give devils some more nhl depth on D. Doesn’t really move the needle but is an upgrade to Carrick

Devs move on from wood. Edmonton adds a player with size and speed who can give some secondary scoring if playing with the right guys

Draft:
7 - Raymond - top 3 talent that had a rough first year in SHL.

18 - Amirov - Schneider and Guhle taken before this pick. Devils get a two way player with skill.

20 - Foerster - one of the best shots in the draft. Skating needs work. May be considered a reach at this slot, but devils plan to draft on ceiling

If Mirco Mueller and Dakota Mermis are both in the starting lineup opening night something went horribly wrong.

If Kasperi Kapanen is worth the 15th overall pick, plus a pretty good prospect and then some, Andreas Johnsson is worth a similar return, so you are looking at one of the Devils later first round picks, and perhaps Michael McLeod. You can say whatever you want, but the Kapanen comp is brand new and will now be used as a point of reference for Leafs when unloading other guys.

The defense is gonna be rough for a bit. Mermis and Severson played well together at the end of the year and mueller wasn’t terrible with subban during that same time span. Mueller needs to be there to actually have someone to play PK. When Ty Smith comes up we may need to move Butcher because they play a similar type of style

Other than who we draft this year and Misyul, our top D prospects (Bahl, Okhotyuk, Smith probably back and forth) will be in Binghamton this year so they’re getting closer. Fingers crossed that we hit on the some of them.

I agree there is no easy fix to the D. But with the flat cap forcing alot of teams to move good players or let free agents walk, this is the time for the Devils to go out and grab a legit NHL defenseman. Not worth a crazy overpay (pls no Pietrangelo for 10Million) but they need to improve on D for the sake of all their young prospects especially Blackwood.

Yeah I agree I just don’t want an overpay. That is one of the things that I battle with thinking about what the team should do moving forward. Trading their assets on expiring contacts like Palmieri Goose and Zajac help the team gain Future assets but most likely it hurts their development of their young forwards. They need to find a happy medium. They can’t have Jack playing wi miles wood and Simmonds (I know he’s gone but you know what I mean).

For the d though, Honestly I hope PK find himself back to being at least an average NHL defenseman and some of our prospects make strides towards being NHL ready. I am really like Cernak but I doubt the Lightning let him go.
