Habs post-expansion draft 2021-2022

Created by: ML16
Team: 2021-22 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 27, 2020
Published: Aug. 27, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Created players from the 2020 draft : Noel Gunler (LW/RW - 16th overall) ; Jérémie Poirier (D - 47th overall); William Dufour (RW - 48th overall) and Luke Tuch (LW - 57th overall)

Trades : Targeted teams with severe cap issues. Tarasenko and his 7,5M vs prospects Jesse Ylonen and Jayden Struble and 1st round pick in the 2021 draft. Alex Killorm and his 4,5M + Mathieu Joseph and a (late) 3rd round pick in 2021 vs Ryan Poehling and Cale Fleury + 5th round pick the same year. Then, Domi (a C at heart) traded to MIN for their 1st pick in 2021 + Greenway. Cap-dumped Byron, a serviceable veteran, but sadly overpaid utility player to the rebuilding Detroit. As for the Mete trade to FLA, it is essentially to make room for the up and coming prospects (Norlinder, Juulsen/Fleury) and thus balance the experience on D.

Expansion Draft : Ben Chiarot becomes a Krak-head!

St Louis and Tampa say no to those trades

Byron isnt a cap dump, when healthy he is serviceable middle six winger

Mete has more value then just moving up in the draft order

Think Seattle takes Armia and not Chiarot if they have thier choice, but I still think Bergevin pays them a draft pick to take who he wants them to

I think a player usually has to pass a physical to complete a trade because nobody is buying damaged goods - besides, no team is ruthless enough to trade a guy that is recovering from surgery anyway.

I do not think MTL has any interest in Danault at a 6 mil cap hit. He's a 50 points player IF he is playing top line minutes and we dont need him to be that anymore. If he decides to resign it most likely is to fill a defensive/3rd line role and thats coming at 4-4.5 mil which he just recently said he doesnt want to do.

I dont know if the tarasenko works out for either team, i'm hesistant to give up Struble as all he does is impress, and Tarasenko is the exact type of scorer we need but by the expansion draft who knows what shape his shoulder is in, its a lot of risk to take on. And if st louis goes through next season and Tarasenko is back fully healthy and team doctors think he is ready to return to form then that package isnt enough either.

Shoot, don't lose Chiarot to Seattle. Trade him to Detroit. You'll get something in return.

Constructive feedback, thanks. Maybe I do undervalue Mete and the suggestion of trading Chiarot to Detroit would mean Mete could then be kept around for third pairing duty until Norlinder crossed the Atlantic! And with Armia drafted by Seattle instead of Chiarot, Byron’s salary could then be tolerated a little further. As for the Tampa trade, I might have overreached, but Florida’s ridiculous tax policy cannot eternally save them from cap-crunch hell! Maybe a revised swap of picks in favor of Tampa could be arranged? As for the St. Louis trade, it’s a gamble for sure with Tarasenko’s injury history, hence why I only included one first round pick on top of Ylonen and Struble - who are amongst the Habs’ most promising prospect. Caufield instead of Ylonen maybe, provided that Tarasenko has not lost his touch? And upon further consideration, Danault could probably be signed around 4,75 or 5 M (in the same waters as JG Pageau of the Islanders). Same thing for Gallagher, he would probably take in the range of 4.5M, as long as there is term.
