Minor Tinkering and Belief in Futures

Created by: benjgc
Team: 2020-21 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 28, 2020
Published: Aug. 28, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If the cost of trading for a 2C like Domi or Monahan is as high as CF users seem to believe it to be, I think the Jackets are better served retooling a bit, making nice with Josh Anderson, and securing some pieces and picks for the future while shedding unnecessary assets and gaining flexibility for the trade deadline. Also assuming that they sign a bunch of two-way contracts to fill out Cleveland's roster.

Please let me know if any of this is way off.

Trades
1.
CBJ
  1. Davidsson, Marcus [Reserve List]
  2. Mittelstadt, Casey [RFA Rights]
BUF
  1. Kukan, Dean
  2. Wennberg, Alexander
Additional Details:
Allowing Buffalo to upgrade down the middle and giving them a solid and inexpensive D while taking back a couple of C prospects who don't seem to have a huge future with Buffalo.
2.
CBJ
  1. 2020 7th round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
Any team will do here; picked Detroit because they may want to let Seider and McIsaac marinate longer in the minors.
3.
CBJ
  1. 2020 3rd round pick (EDM)
CGY
  1. Kivlenieks, Matiss
  2. Nutivaara, Markus
Additional Details:
Nuti can play either side, and allows Treliving to have some flexibility in dealing with his UFA D situation while not blocking the future. Kivlenieks is a capable and cheap backup for Rittich (I'm assuming Calgary doesn't make a big move for a goalie in this scenario).

That's fair! Like I said, if there's a fit, great! If not, eh. Would Riley Nash be a better fit? Only $2.75M cap hit, responsible at both ends.

Sabres are pretty well covered in terms of defensive talent, especially since Krueger did a decent job implementing that kind of system. They need players with above average shooting talent, that seems to be the scheme. They don't give up a lot of quality chances, but in turn dont generate many so they need guys who can bury the ones they get or can consistently score on the type of chances that the average shooter can't.

Maybe not a fit with Columbus, then, since we don't have a lot of shooting talent up the middle. If Jarmo decides to move Josh Anderson's rights, rather than signing him, I could see Buffalo being a partner, assuming they have room for a winger.

[stares at you in Yanni Gourde and Charlie Coyle and JG Pageau]

Except Coyle and Pageau aren’t 3rd line talents. They would be at least 2nd elsewhere.

Just going based on what you said. And the point stands re: Gourde.

It’s tough... Wennbergs buyout is so team friendly. That I could see a team taking a chance on him for a cheap price, that being said I don’t think any fan base is going to want him at his 4.9 cap hit. After rewatching the TBL series Wennberg looked like he did when he had his career year. In the same note, Jenner looked pretty bad except his faceoff ability. I know the team likes Jenner, but if Wennberg is able to finally get back to his 59 point forum he could be helpful. That being said we’ve seen this before with him and chose wrong. Wennberg is also pretty good defensively so maybe someone bites on him.

All that being said a minor move offseason would be smart. Though I wouldn’t move so many D. I’d let Peeke be the number 1 in the AHL next year with Carlsson and keep Kukan and Nuttivaara.

As long as we can agree on shipping out Harrington for the highest pick we can get for him.

He just needs to be gone... I knew that would be a bad signing when Jarmo announced it... Jarmo has done some great things in Columbus.... that wasn’t one of them, though he is a decent 7th D.

Gourde is a decent player making about twice as much as he is worth. That is a bad contract. That’s why Tampa needs to move it, although they’re going to have to pay someone to take it. He could play second line somewhere and maybe be productive, but not $5 million a year productive.
