lol all good. i think your logic sound but even if yakemchuk is gone, the Sabres dont really care about left vs right for the blue line. Also get the impression they just dont like drafting d-men in the first round.

Why wouldn't the Sabres just take Yakemchuk at 11? I bet they'd take a forward any how.

Buffalo Sabres 2024-25 Playoff Roster
i doubt tampa deals hagel for futures. They just signed him, and its a very team friendly deal.
The toronto deal doesnt make any sense either. Forget skinner for a sec, the leafs have made a whole thing about getting tougher. Theyre not going to go from guys like Bertuzzi to someone like Skinner.
Im also not sure where this notion that adams is going to get crazy aggressive in the off season is coming from either. He point blank told season ticket holders he was aiming for a 3C and depth. He may have to overpay for it, but thats not an indication that he's considering an aggressive overhaul.

This is some kinda shake up lol.
I like Marino for Buf but all that money committed on D already. if you wanna give him away we'll take him, but have to save the overpays for a 3C sadly.
I'd overpay for Mercer though

in fairness, they're already probably at peak anger right now so if you were ever going to try something like this now would be the time what with their focus split.

This isnt a new report its the same half baked one from pagnotta from before. Theyre not after another d-man or a top 6 fwd, those spots are spoken for.

I think even with a guy like laughton theres probably a spot for him somewhere where he can recapture some of his value. For me when I say sabres fans say it I interpret it as "its a sucky fit".
I may be wrong on that as laughton's name has come up before, but I have to think whoever they overpay for at 3C is going to be a good skater. Would have to be Id think to make it work.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMDannyB</b></div><div>I actually think it’s the opposite. Cates is so naturally defensively sound but Torts’ system and use of him severely limits his offense. In a more free flowing system he might really rack up some points. I worry about him shining in Torts’ system not the other way around lol.</div></div>
He could be, but he's also a little slow and that typically doesn't play out well for a team like the Sabres. It would be weird to trade mittelstadt for byram to add speed to the team only to go add cates. Not a slight at him, just strikes me as kind of incoherent.

U all hate Laughton, Cates is gonna take an overpay to move, and then there’s Farabee so feel like the most reasonable option. But then ur not gonna get a 24 year old that just broke 50 points for cheap.</div></div>
I mean all those reasons are what make them bad trade partners. I could see them overpaying for cates, if they miss out elsewhere. But they run the risk of it being a bad system fit going from Torts to Ruff.

i am not the gm, and im also not a gambling man but even I would put a huge chunk of money on that sabres deal not happening. Theyre hot for kulich and I doubt they take a big swing in the summer after flipping casey for byram.

I think the Sabres are going to fit every single prospect you mentioned in their lineup at some point lol. Ostlund is 2 years away. Savoie will get a full year in the AHL. contracts will come off the books by the time they are ready.

Byram has played some of his worst hockey on the right side and Power-Dahlin can't be broken up with how they played down the stretch. Need someone to play the right side with Byram and that moves Samuelsson to 3LD or off the roster.</div></div>
They probably think Samuelsson will be better off the top pair and that Byram will play better with samuelsson than he will with Jokiharju. I agree they should move on but they wont do it this summer. Theyre largely a reactionary franchise. If he has another bad season, then he's probably gone.

The actual script for next year
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Cornbreadnhl</b></div><div>Yeah, I get that, but at some point I would think ownership would want to make the playoffs and get the added revenue that comes with that. IMO, it isn't a lack of talent keeping them outside the playoffs, its the lack of structure and sound defensive hockey along with needing more grit. I think Berube would have fixed those things pretty quickly and got them going in the right direction.</div></div>
There's a good chance they asked Berube and he said no, they didnt start this process overnight. Ownership gets a huge chunk of money through revenue sharing. Its actually more cost effective to ice a team well below the cap ceiling and get that money than it is for him to spend 20 mil more with no guarantee of a playoff spot.

none of them want this job lol. Its not the same time horizon as GM. young talent for a coach means high volatility and unpredictability. Most vet coaches want something more stable. Additionally, the sabres have a meddlesome owner who is penny pinching.

Sabres have a history of trading up for guys they really like so it wouldn't surprise me but I think the general feeling for this draft class is lukewarm at best. Id be shocked if they really needed that one spot jump for a guy they like but you never know.

Agreed but you can't ask krebs to carry both kulich and skinner defensively. Faksa has a much longer track record of being able to handle that. Its possible that under Ruff, Krebs eventually over takes Faksa, but Imo this is how hed start it.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Cornbreadnhl</b></div><div>Are buffalo fans happy with Ruff coming back? Wouldn't Berube been a better choice?</div></div>
I agree Berube would have been better, but Im happy with it. The team is in the crapper reputation wise. they needed some luck to turn things around, and it just so happens that Ruff, who is a solid coach in general, has ties to the area. Thats the kind of break they needed. He's not perfect, but it's an upgrade.
Also, I think Berube is waiting to see what happens with other playoff teams coaches. And if youre the Sabres, you dont want to wait too long. You'd almost certainly lose the musical chairs game once other more lucrative jobs open up.
