Initial Creation Date: Aug. 25, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Dubinsky is a cap dump and to take on that cap dump we get back a young promising defensive d man who can hold down the fort for our more offensively inclined players.

Andersen is dealt to recoup some assets in a pick with conditions, prospect playing in Russia and a 3rd pair d man/depth piece.

Sign Demelo to play some heavy minutes
Sign Fast to provide some speed and grit to the depth lines
Sign Talbot or some other cheaper UFA goalie to split time with Campbell. A lot of NHL teams are going to tandem goaltending so doesn't have to be Talbot but someone to split time

Dermott on the bench may seem silly but my actual idea is to play 7 d and have Lehtonen be a PP specialist type. Having 7 d allows to have more specialized players and allows us to play our big guns more often up front. Pull Spezza or Engvall from the game to dress another d and you can choose if you want to double shift matthews or tavares or marner or whoever.

that goalie tandem is a tire fire waiting to happen.
TOR isnt a good enough defensive team to play a tandem of two fringe NHL starters.

That’s a no from Columbus. We can put our own player on LTIR. Peeke is off the table from Columbus unless Liljegren is coming back.

Thats fair for sure. Im not saying we lead the league or anything but the idea is to have two guys that if one catches fire you ride him a bit. I also think the Leafs wont be as bad with a full year of Keef and no ceci or barrie to drag them down. ITs by no means a perfect idea but i can see it happening as much as the risk you point out is very valid and real

I took the idea from an article on The Athletic when Aaron Portzline said CBJ are looking to unload the Dubinsky contract. So it's not coming out of nowhere. Are you proposing a Liljegren for Peeke swap? Looking at CBJs depth i think they need forwards with skill more than more defensemen. That was my idea behind Johnsson and Bracco going the other way.

As bad as Barrie was, TOR also forgets that his hole is also 40pts to be replaced too.
Id argue that this D core isnt miles better than what they had as a whole this year.

Id much rather have Ceci/Barrie/Andersen > DeMelo/Holl/Talbot (looking at top4 D assuming Rielly and Muzzin at 1-2 on the left side)

Thats a good point they will need to replace those points but i think with improvement from Dermott, Lehtonen isn't going to get 40 but he's a very offensive minded player you can cover that point lose. Demelo covers Ceci's 8 pts and could get more like his 20 he got in past seasons.

I agree that losing Andersen hurts but i really like a smarter puck moving d core helps a lot and will make for a better team. Sign Greiss or Khudobin or someone else for cheap but tandem is the way i think they will try to go

Johnsson and Bracco don't satisfy our need for top-6 forward talent (and I mean top-6 on a contender, not on a second- or third-tier team), particularly if they can be a 2C for us. And I think AJP's point was that Peeke isn't a throw-in for us; we're far more likely to part with Murray, Nutivaara, or even Kukan or Savard. And while CBJ would like to clear Dubi's salary, it's not so bad as to be our top priority this offseason, and we're not gonna sacrifice a young, cost-controlled asset like Peeke to do it.

Columbus doesn’t need more forwards lmao. We need a 2nd line center. Columbus has plenty of depth and decent wings. The reason Peeke is 100% off the table is hes the only RHD prospect we have that’s NHL projected and with Savard being a UFA following next season Peeke will have to be ready to step into the top 4 at that time, as will will likely need that cap room to keep Jones. Those are the only 3 RHD Columbus has in their entire organization who are NHL players or prospects. We have lots of d depth yes, but most of them are LHD, not RHD.

Fairs points both of you. Im dreaming a little as a leafs fan so i do acknowledge that it might be a bit ambitious to get Peeke. He's a good player and someone id like to add so maybe not a deal to be made. Now if you want to dump Savard we'd be interested in him as well but then what is that price?

Savard is available as part of a package that brings back true, top-6 F talent, preferably someone who can be a 2C. A package that brings back, say, Nylander would be ideal. Again: a package. Not suggesting Savard for Nylander 1-for-1, as seems to be assumed every time I mention his name.

Don't worry man, Im smart enough to understand the word package and not think its 1 -1. Im a big Nylander fan so that'd be tough for me to look at dealing him but depending on what said package is coming back might be worth exploring. Do you have any thoughts on what that could be?

Mid-tier assets include Savard for your top-4 RHD that you need so badly, Boone Jenner for some sand, Josh Anderson's RFA rights, either Korpi (if you deal Freddie) or one of our goalie prospects like VV or Tarasov.

Lower-tier assets: Riley Nash, Dubi's deal if you really want that LTIR space, Gabriel Carlsson, Markus Nutivaara, Ryan Murray, Scott Harrington.

Basically off-limits: Jones, Z, Dubois, Gavrikov, Bjorkstrand, Elvis (exempt in the Seattle draft), Foudy, Texier, Bemstrom (unless the deal's heavily tilted in CBJ's favor)

Just tough for us to trade: Foligno (captain with an NMC), Atkinson (homegrown fan-favorite with an M-NTC).

Leafs can't make a deal like this. Not sure there's a good fit between these two teams.

Sadly, I agree. If the Kapanen trade hadn't happened, I'd see it as more likely. But I suppose it depends heavily on how the RHD market develops.
