Would this trade work

Initial Creation Date: Sep. 1, 2020
Published: Sep. 1, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I know Dubas said he didn't want to play with LTIR money this year, but if doing so allowed you to upgrade in net and on RD, even for just this season he'd almost have to, This deal saves AZ around 14 million in real dollars over the next 2 years. They can run Raanta/Fred for 20/21 then Hill/Raanta when Fred leaves in FA.

Kuemper is worth more than Anderson, and Hjalmarsson is worth more than nothing.

Kuemper is owed 9M in real dollars over the next 2 seasons. Fred is owed 1. Kuemper may be the better goalie and have an extra year of term left, but to a money strapped team Fred for a year at $1M in real dollars is very enticing. Plus the Leafs take on Hossa's $2m in remaining dollars on LTIR and Hjalmarsson's $4M.

financially its a very good deal for AZ. On ice its a very good deal for the Leafs.

Plenty of teams would offer a 1st+ for kuemper. That solves more issues for them. Rantanen is the goalie they will probably move.

Not a big fan of moving Johnsson if we don’t have to. Maybe a move for Hjalmarrson through another team that retains 50% could work.

Hossa's contract is insured. He's owed $200k. Hjalmarsson is owed only 2M post-bonuses, which presumably is sunk cost post 1 July. It doesn't really help them at all. You're not doing them any favour.

Why would they accept this offer? Andersen-Keumper, swap? Eh, maybe if they are desperate to save cash. Have to think there are other teams who would be interested in a great starter under $5M for two years. Throwing away Hjalmarsson for nothing just to help you out? Not a chance. They'll just get a second, maybe more, from some other team interested. You have him slotted in on your first pairing. So you think they don't value him similarly?

I think Demers or Hjalmarsson make sense for Toronto. One of those guys and Fischer, for Kerfoot/AJohnsson, Engvall, and a pick of sorts is basically cap neutral, and shuffles cap from the Leafs third line to a steady top-4 RHD.

You could probably fetch Raanta cheap. Excellent numbers the past few years. Lost his starting gig to Keumper. Expiring contract.

If I were the Coyotes, I'd deal Raanta to clear cap, and hold on to all the expiring vets until the TDL. Tanking and fire sale doesn't do much good without a first rounder in 2021.

If the pick were higher maybe? a 2nd or 3rd?

Nope. The other issue is your forward depth. You are a couple injuries away from Brooks playing in the top 6.

Ltir doesn’t have negative value, it has zero value. And the top concern isn’t always financial. Arizona will need more. Maybe Liljegren cuts it for them.

Hossa's contract is insured so its a moot point. But it wasnt the LTIR relief I was after here, it was the real dollars being paid out. Hossa's salary would be $1M, Yotes would still have to pay that for 2 years were the contract not insured

They yotes will want more is my point. Not bothering with the actual dollars, just value.

The entire trade was based around taking advantage of the Yotes financial situation, not accounting for real dollars yeah they'll want more, but revenues are down and $10M+ in real dollars off the books is still a good thing for them. I do have to rework the trade though, Hossa's contract being insured shot this one down pretty quick.

Ok. I do this a Anderson year lus for Kuemper is a good idea. But Anderson PLUS is the key word. Kuemper is worth more. End of story. I’d be willing to pay more.
