Matheson

Created by: AlphaHockey65
Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 3, 2020
Published: Sep. 3, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I don't have high hopes for POJ on the Pens. They seem really high on him but I think he only starts making
an impact after the Sid/Geno decline.

Trades
1.
PIT
  1. Matheson, Michael
Additional Details:
I read a lot of Panthers fans really unhappy about this guy and his massive deal. Change of scenary, Florida saves 3 years of his contract and 1.4 mil per season in cap.
FLA
  1. Johnson, Jack
Additional Details:
Florida gets a cheaper contract with less term.
Pens add a bit because Matheson is the superior player?
2.
PIT
  1. Kunin, Luke [RFA Rights]
MIN
  1. Murray, Matt [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Guerin looks for a goalie and calls his old friend Jim.
Pens probably send an extra pick or prospect as Kunin is a solid young player
3.
PIT
  1. Montour, Brandon [RFA Rights]
BUF
  1. Bjugstad, Nick ($1,100,000 retained)
  2. McCann, Jared [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Pens send a top 6 winger with some untapped potential and a 100% healthy Bjugstad (according to GMJR) with $1.1 in retention.

I think Pens add a pick here as well. Maybe a 2020 3rd or 2021 2nd

That Matheson trade isn't fair. Jack Johnson is the WORST player in the NHL. At least Matheson is useful in the bottom pairing

That's why I wrote pens add a little. But let's not act like Matheson's massive contract is movable. He's a 3rd pairing D who can slide into the top 4 when needed

POJ is a player you need then, especially with PIT’s prospect pool

I can give you my personal guarantee that Kunin will not be traded for Murray. That's not a good deal for the Wild.

I don't think he's ready for an NHL role yet. After reading what a lot of analysts have said, he needs more experience and can't be rushed

I have no idea what the goalie market will be like. I only see Minnesota as a potential candidate because of Bill Guerin. Jim said he's exclusively looking at younger players so that's why I chose Kunin

Kunin is one of Minnesota's only RHF in the organization. Both the best now and for the future too

Ah, well yeah surely don’t rush the guy. Hang onto him and see how he pans out when Sid and Geno start to decline.

I think Brodin makes more senses but it would take A LOT more than Murray.
I guess it all depends on if they think Brodin will sign an extension

You can get Hartman if you want a RH RW. Kunin is not on the table for Murray. And frankly the latest rumors I've seen don't even list Minnesota as one of the top 5 or so suitors at this point, which is good, because for the price Penguins fans want, and the contract Murray wants, I'll gladly stay far away. We already have Kahkonen ready to go.

The Penguins don't even have the assets to begin the discussion, frankly.

Honestly, I'm not very high on Murray.
I would be perfectly okay with a Hartman for Murray swap. A lot of fans need to realize his value isn't that much, and BEST case scenario is the one I listed on this trade.

I don't think a Brodin deal works tbh. I think if Minnesota is making a move for Murray, they're probably just doing it with a pick. And with GMJR's focus on winning now i don't know if he'd be interested in that.

I think unless PIT adds, everyone they might be interested in but pretty much Greenway & Donato would be off limits

Montour and Matheson are both bad (though less bad than Jack). That's a bad third pairing.
