Moves for the Future

Created by: Waddilyp
Team: 2020-21 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 6, 2020
Published: Sep. 6, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With the cap potentially staying at 81.5 million for the next 3-5 years, teams like the Rangers should look to minimize the number of players on large long-term contracts that are not team friendly. Because of this, the Rangers look to offload Trouba in order to save 2.5 million each year for the next 8 years by resigning Deangelo instead. It also makes sense to trade away Kreider when Lafreniere can fill that 2nd line LW spot for much cheaper. The long-term contracts that the Rangers do sign, Domi, Deangelo and Sergachev, are both cheaper than the players would be making on the open market without the flat cap and they extend pass the flat cap and will become bargains at that point.

The Rangers would have a couple training camp battles in this as Gauthier, Puljujarvi, Kravtsov and Di Giuseppe would battle for the 2 RW spots (Lemieux would move over if DiGiuseppe won a spot), Barron, Howden, Richards and Khodorenko would battle for the 4th center spot and Staal, Rykov, Smith and Miller would battle for the final LHD spot.

Explaining Trades for Both Teams:
Trouba Trade: The Ducks get a top right handed defensemen who can captain a PP while the Rangers move on from Trouba's contract and get good assets for him (I can remove the 2021 3rd if that is too much).

Sergachev Trade: Rangers get a top LHD while the Bolts move on from someone they wouldn't be able to resign due to the flat cap and recieve more than they would from an offer sheet in picks for this year and a good prospect in Hajek.

Domi Trade: The Rangers get a solid 2nd line center while the Canadiens trade from a position of strength and get back a young winger and two solid picks.

Kreider Trade: The Avalanche get a top LW who can help them get a Stanley Cup while giving up fairly expendable assets while the Rangers no longer need Kreider so they get away from his contract by trading him and they get back Jost to upgrade their PK and 3rd line and some good future assets.

Puljujarvi trade: The Rangers get a potential top 6 or solid 3rd line RW for the forseable future while the Oilers trade a player who no longer wants to play for them and receive a potential 3rd line center who fills a hole for them in Andersson and picks.

Strome Trade: Dallas receives a fourth round pick and a center who was on pace for 69 points last year while only giving up a late first while the Rangers get a late 1st for a player they no longer need.

Big no from oilers. Better off looking elsewhere than coming up with an offer that’s going to tempt Holland.
Copenhagen liked this.

What do you think a fair trade is for Puljujarvi considering his situation with the Oilers? I know some Oilers fans want a 1st for him but I find it hard to believe that any NHL team will give up a first for a player who refuses to play for their team, especially with them likely to lose him for nothing in the Vegas expansion draft.

Edit: I know that Mark Spector said that they were going to be able to sign Puljujarvi but the week after he reupped his contract in Finland and no one else has confirmed Spector at all.

Holland wants a first and a prospect, oilers fans heard it and go from there. If rangers really really want him, give us Kakko. JP will outscore Kakko next year for sure.

Ask I heard on a sports radio program in Edmonton was a first and prospect. High ask because zero intentions to move Holland was clear when he took over bringing jp back is top priority and to be fair this upcoming season was the soonest realistic time frame he had to work with. Jp was committed to Finland and wasn’t coming back before the signing deadline to qualify for post season play so any mid season thing was just not in the cards for both sides.
This entire situation looks worse than it really is expect to see jp in an oilers jersey when camps begin.

This isn't bad.

Swap the compensation for Domi/Kreider and you'd be more in the ballpark.

Chytil's also a much better player than Jost.

COL accepts, TBL declines sure there are better offers out there, ANA 100% declines, EDM declines, MTL probably accepts, DAL maybe:

For the ANA-NYR trade having the 1st and jones is too much. If they ever targeted Trouba(I hope they never do) I hope its something like Benoit-Olivier Groulx and a 3rd for Trouba. I know not fair value. Contract says otherwise.
