Simon for Hagelin? Caps probably accept for cap space, even though Simon doesn't fill a particular need at this point.

5th for 250k retention? Teams can only retain on three players at a time. What about Marino for Hagelin with $1 million retained for three years?

Agree, I was pondering on retaining salary or no. Giving us Hagelin helps the Caps with cap space for sure for signing guys like Vrana, Samsonov, Ovi, etc.

Aw Eli... it's so nice that you are back. This literally got a laugh out of me.

Pittsburgh counters with Ruhwedel 50% retained for Vrana. That is basically the mirror of what you just said.

And that package isn’t close for Buf anyways. Pick 38 and Kahun for McCann and a career AHLer is so bad. I think both Pitt and Buf should be over our annual trades. Time to move on

Thanks for explaining the joke. I wasn't sure if everybody else got it. smile

But worst case, the Caps in two and a half years could look like L.A.: sign superstars to huge extensions and then fall apart completely. If Ovechkin requests a trade to a contender, the Caps are gonna want to ship Backstrom and Oshie out as well. On contracts that size, the difference between their trade value at full price and at half price is going to be about a first round pick, each.

And then you ask: a first round pick for Oshie in two years? Be lucky to get a second rounder with max retention.

And then I say: Yep. And in two more years, you'd be lucky to give him away with just a 2nd as a sweetener, without retention.

Pens are working their way around that, with the Kessel and Zucker trades, and gradually retooling to stay competitive.

Caps are starting to hold onto more draft picks and develop a few. Each team might just be able to soft-rebuild and keep making the playoffs in its own way. Whether that's the best move, I don't know, but winning is fun.

What does anything that you just said there have to do with my post that you quoted?

thats avs trade is awful
Murray wouldnt net the 24th overall pick in the draft, yet you want a 2nd for him on top of that.

It's possible dude. You ever think Kapanen would net a 1st rounder?

just bc your GM over paid and was desperate for a forward doesnt set a market for a goalie who has major injury issues, coming off a horrible season, and who is asking for a dumb contract with Arb rights in an off season that goalies are very abundant.

No GM is going to rush out and trade 2 top picks for Murray.

at the most a 2nd an a conditional 3rd round pick. Way too much risk involved in him to invest any significant assets in

Hagelin is 32 years old and has averaged 36 points per 82 games. He's also the Caps' best penalty killing forward.

Dominik Simon is only 26, but he's only averaged 30 points per 82 games, career. He's kinda bad at special teams so far, although he hasn't played enough to be sure.

Cap space and youth are nice, but the Caps have center prospects who will make the NHL. They don't have any RHD prospects. That's why I posted the counter, but I guess you saw it. smile https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/362279?post_id=1732460
