The hope is that you can sell him on term to keep him close to home, ideally to keep the dollar value down. There are definitely some teams who will offer more money over short term. Most people knew the Lucic deal was gonna be bad because of the high AAV and term of the deal. Applying that logic to Simmonds, I feel its better to go more term at a lower AAV to give the player stability close to home.
