Super Unrealistic Trade with Rival

Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 12, 2020
Published: Sep. 13, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1st is top 10 protected and trade is made under the assumption that Danault has made it clear he wants to test free agency waters (i.e can't part of a sign and trade).

I know it's very unrealistic, but god I would love Danault on the Leafs. Incredible defensively (imo he should have been a Selke finalist this year) and can still produce at a solid rate (mainly at 5v5) while playing against top competition and starting the majority of his shifts in the Dzone. Gives the Leafs a plethora of options up front. I'm also a firm believer that the Leafs can't just bring in some magical unicorn Dman and fix all their problems, and while this won't either, I think it's a big step forward as playing D takes contributions from the forwards and they get an elite defensive C and can still afford a solid defensive Dman in Demelo through FA as well.

Johnsson's just on LTIR because I didn't want to be told what he is/isn't worth.

So yeah, this is more of just a "let me dream AGM". But if you still feel the need to tell me it won't ever happen, feel free.

what a pointless trade for the leafs that would be, a 2nd line C is literally the last thing the leafs would need and would be a waste of assets

Disagree. They get an elite 2 way C (can't really ever have enough of those) for $1.5m and it allows the to free up cap space by trading other guys from their forward group while still improving in that area and then attempt to use that cap space to address their other needs. Is it first on their list? No, definitely not. Is it pricey? Yes. But I think this roster is fantastic. As I said, this is myself dreaming; I really like the outcome here. If you don't, that's perfectly fine.

a 1st and 4th - not 2nd. But yes. It would change the way I would handle the draft; not one for drafting for position but if the guys that really like are gone by 15, perhaps trade down and look at Schneider or Barron.

how does this allow them to free up cap space? all it does here is add more cap hit at a redundant position. IF the leafs moved Tavares it might make sense, but makes zero sense here.
You can like the outcome, but this is still a team that blew some assets that could have gotten something to fill their actual needs instead and probably isnt significantly better because all they got was a ok defensive defender

They can trade a guy like Johnsson or Kerfoot to clear cap (about a $2m difference between each of them and Danault) and recoup assets and Danault is an unquestionable upgrade on either of them

They did fill their actual needs. Defense is a team game and they got one of the best defensive forwards in the league. Demelo was also tremendous defensively this year.

What a massive overpay. Danault is good but seriously, this isn't Bergeron we are talking about. Besides that, Matthews is turning into an incredibly good defensive player. Coupled with his incredible offensive game, why wouldn't you put him out there against the other teams best. He can defend them better than Danault will and also make them play defence all the time. This trade is so needless and honesty just bad. If you want a two way centre. Keep the 15th and pick Lapierre.

You listen to pundits who make money by speculating about the Leafs. Reality doesn't matter to them, just emotions of fans. Like Burke constantly saying Nylander has to be traded for some 2nd tier right handed nearly 30 year old defenceman because truckulence.

Absolutely zero interest in taking Lapierre. Also, I did keep the 15th pick.

I don't think this is a massive overpay. I think it is a slight one (I always tend to overpay in my AGM's so as not to hear dumb **** from other fanbases), but I also think you are undervaluing Danault. To get a guy of his caliber for $1.5m would be awesome. He's one of the best defensive C's in the game and also ranks in the top 30 in 5v5 points over the last two years. Matthews has had one season of being above average defensively, and while I expect that trend to continue, I don't see the issue with allowing Danault (definitely better defensively than Matthews) to take the tough match ups, freeing up the Tavares/Matthews/Marner line to play against other teams lesser players. At the very least, match ups don't have to be a concern for the Leafs at all and they can roll their lines however they want and let other teams chase them. I don't have an issue with running Matthews against other teams top guys, but I'm not opposed to this either. All in all, I think this trade (I'm looking at DeMelo as part of the benefit of it), while an overpay and not absolutely essential I agree with you on that, upgrades the Leafs at offence and defense.

What's wrong with Lapierre? He looks like the next Bergeron. And DeMelo is not a saviour. He is a good player who had a good season and someone will overpay him. Liljegren could be come a terrific player and giving up on him and a 1st for a guy who is good but not terrific is a terrible idea. Kerfoot is good defensively, and at 3C he's fine. JT and Matthews should be the top 2 centres always

I should have said no interest in taking him at 15. Could end up being a steal for somebody, but there are major health concerns there (that could be a non issue, I'm no medical expert) and he just has no goal scoring to his game; absolute muffin of a shot. There are just a number of guys I'd take over him at 15. If I had extra picks (cough Devils cough), I'd take a shot on him for sure.

I know DeMelo is no saviour. In fact I think the concept of one guy coming in to be a saviour is a bit absurd. I just think that he and Danault both are good pieces that could improve the team. That's just my opinion.

If you think this is an overpay, that's fine. Bodes well for me actually, because I'd be pretty okay with this as is.

Being okay with overpaying is silly.
