Trade doesn't make sense for the Wild.

How does it not make sense for MIN? They move out a vet who is in his final year of his contract before going URFA, and get 2 young players for their top 6-9. Where is the issue?

This looks suspiciously like a cap dump. I could see kerfoot coming over in a deal for Staal but it would also include a 1st or 2nd coming with him. The Wild have no use for more wingers.

The Wild don’t need wings. If you give Minn Kerfoot they will take a 1st with him.

They are cap dumps in the sense that the Leafs want/need to free up cap space... not in the sense that they are on bad contracts.
Both players have decent contracts for their value.
The Leafs just can't afford these "Nice-to-haves" if they want to improve other areas of their lineup (i.e. RD), given all their money goes to the top end of their lineup.

Right, the Wild might be able to use Kerfoot but the real return they want for Staal is a pick, especially with retention. Everybody knows the Leafs need to move them so the price offered will be low.

So how'd that mid six player + 1st or 2nd for Staal prediction work out???

I would say the original poster's offer was much closer to reality.

Indeed it is. I can’t see why this move was made unless something bigger is right around the corner.
