2nd Round Exit this year

Created by: AV12
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 17, 2020
Published: Sep. 17, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Miller Trade: I think buffalo can use a top 6 winger at a decent cap hit like Johnson as long as they also acquire another C like Haula, miller is also expandable on the right side if they keep Risto. I threw in Bracco so buffalo can retain some salary on miller however could throw in the 4th round pick to make it happen.
Dermott Trade: I hate to see dermott go but honestly with Sandin and Lehtonnen who is supposed to be good we can flip dermott at the very least for a 2nd round pick. WPG was chosen randomly cause I think they're a team that needs defenders.

Hossa trade: I know this doesn't affect the cap but I can see someone like the leafs getting a free pick for taking hossas contract away from Arizona just so ownership can save money.

Why would adding an AHL player make us want to retain salary?

The Hossa Contract would be very bad for Toronto this year. Dubas stated that he would like some cap flexibility throughout the season, and cap space can accrue as much as 4x throughout the season. If the Leafs were left with 500K at the start of the year, they could have 2M by the deadline to add a depth piece if there's an injury or hole of some nature, or trade a bigger piece (like kerfoot) and add a 5M player.

he adds zero value and he isn't an NHL player and the sabres are on an internal budget and won't be paying big AHL salaries this year.

Hossa trade does affect the cap. In your scenario Leafs cannot add a player at the deadline, unless they subtract from their roster. So no UFA for a 2nd type deals. If a team is using LTIR their cap does not accumulate during the year, therefore at the deadline Leafs still have $94K in capspace (barring other LTIR injuries).

Jumping 60ish spots in the middle of the draft is not worth the headache.

Lehtonen is interesting because from what ive heard and seen he was signed with the intention of playing him in the show but I also think sandin is very elite and deserves a shot this year at being a regular, we did burn the first year of his ELC so you know for sure Sandin plays. Maybe Lehtonen on the right side? and then you use Sandin-Holl, Muzz-Lehtonen, Rielly-Hamonic?

True, LTIR is quite confusing so I probably do not understand it fully. Like I dont understand how last year we had like 8-10mil on LTIR with Clarkson and Horton.

I don’t think there is any single piece you would add that would make the Sabres OK with retaining on Miller. Eat the whole contract or don’t take it.

yea makes sense, but I also think a lot of people undervalue Johnson (or maybe I over value him a bit) but I see him as being equal in talent right now to Kapanen (Kappy has speed Johnson has a better shot). People think kappy has a lot of room to grow still which I think he will too, but once he was playing with Mathews and JT he did nothing.

Maybe im underating millers value, I saw a couple sabres fans trade him for lower picks (3rd round and 5th round). So I thought Johnson value was great than that, and throwing in a pick(or prospect) to retain 1-1.5 mil would get it done. Maybe not tho

Lehtonen was regarded as the best non NHL defenseman last year. I’d say the lineup you made with Lehtonen out with Muzzin is a fair one

I would consider Johnsson for Miller as a trade, but not with retention

There are a number of fans that seems to think LTIR is some sort of cheat code. In reality, you don't want to be consistently living on LTIR. Mostly for the reason that cap space will accrue over the course of the season (why is a big reason why the Leafs couldn't add help at the deadline last year).

Unless you're stealing a useful player from another team, taking on an LTIR contract from another team is a very bad idea. Taking the Hossa contract for getting a deal on Kuempfer? Maybe. Taking Kessler in a deal for Manson? Sure. But other than that....
